4WD GPS

I know this topic gets covered a bit round the net but new technology comes out all the time.
ive got a samsung tab s 10.5 with a sim card i want to use while out 4wding for a gps.
what apps / maps do people use and is hema the way to go or is there something better.

I have an iPhone/iPad and
I have an iPhone/iPad and use Hema maps. Pretty good, but it's not super detailed. If you're 4WD'ing in places with lots of tracks, you're not really going to know which track you're on if it is marked at all. When you're zoomed in max, it is still about a 5 - 6km scale. Did help me out once when I missed a track turn-off. After about 2-3km it was abvious we'd missed it. Saved a lot of time.

Garmin Montana
I have a Garmin Montana 650t handheld GPS, which came preloaded with Australian/NZ maps including detailed 4WD tracks.
These are brilliant. Also comes with a windscreen mount for driving, or remove for hiking to fishing spots.
Can zoom in to at least 30 metres (probably more). Detail is great and the tracks that it shows in remote places is amazing
Around $750, but well worth the money.

Intersting about the garmin,
Intersting about the garmin, thats exactly what I had in mind when I purchased the Hema app. I've heard theres other ways you can load up topography maps onto ipads but havent looked into it further. Hema doesnt really show you anything too detailed or more than a paper map, the main advantage is overlaying your position onto the screen and thats helped me out a few times. I'm big on loading up google earth when in reception closing the app and reopening when I'm out on the tracks, a fair area stays loaded and youe position is once again overlayed.

hema and android
the issue with the hema maps is that the 4wd map pack is only available on apple. I have hema explorer on my samsung and a hema hn7 on the dash. The hn7 is vastly better than the samsung but the tracks actually have to have been mapped to show up, head to wilbinga for instance and none on the tracks appear

I've been using OziExplorer
I've been using OziExplorer on my Samsung tablet & in-dash Andriod 7" screen for a while, and it works awesomely - I have loaded a stack of CALM forrestry maps, which show just about every track in the southwest that a vehicle could conceivably drive on. Only problem is that the CALM maps only cover the SW.
I also use HEMA Maps on my ipad, which have both 100k and 250k scale topo maps for all of WA - that work's pretty well also.

The other issue with using a
The other issue with using a tablet with HEMA maps is that its reliant on cell reception, therefore your mapping and orientation is limited by mobile coverage. I have a HEMA 7 and its a useful bit of kit. However, admittedly im a little disappointed with the lack of granularity on maps (and I have the 100k as well as the 150k ). but the tracking feature is ace for finding your way back from those hard to reach landbased fishing spots

you can get around it
the lack of reception by downloading the maps for offline uze but it's painful and clunky. Another one that nseems to good reviews on 4wd sites is mudmaps

Both my ipad and Samsung
Both my ipad and Samsung Galaxy tablet have built-in GPS, so neither are dependant on mobile coverage - we've just done the Gibb River Road using them, and they worked a treat.
I think that nowadays most tablets run a dedicated GPS that operates independently of mobile coverage.

The ipads that can accept a sim card are the ones with the built in GPS. The ipads that cant accept a sim, don't have the built in GPS.
So an ipad that can accept a sim is the one to use, however do not need a sim in it to run Hema maps and it will work outside of mobile range.

Exactly, I dont use any fancy apps i use a maps/tracks book when the ph GPS isnt so accurate and we go pretty remote....
Depends on how sucked in you want to get really but spending $750 seems out there to me!!

You will always find unmarked tracks so you just save the satellite map and know where to turn.etc

Mud Maps
I use Mud Maps2 on my iPad have had no trouble with
has all manner of maps to use and satellite capable.
I use it as a back up as ive got a VMS7000 Handheld unit, would recommend it to anyone,that's if you want to spend a bit of cash
