52.50kg Bass Groper yesterday 31/1/2014 * Pending WA & Australian record!!
Good mate Steve enjoys fishing out in the super deep and does well. We were talking recently and he said " I want to get a big bass groper Ryan "
No worries I have a few cheeky spots that hold fish ie 30-40kg Bass Groper so lets go when the weathers suitable. Steve mentioned he was going away for work and Friday (31/1/14) was ther only day!
I said the weather is very average but Steve owns a 53ft (Nebraska Charters) and he said common mate let's do it ....... mmhhhhh ok!!!
We threw ropes early ie 4am and off we went, we pulled a few fish from Steve's spots ie greyband etc but Steve was keen to hunt for a bass!
By now the wind was up (even more) and I said we'll go to this spot and give it a go ...... searching searching searching and nothing!
I said I've got another spot near by and its a bass lump with hard limestone and a hidey hole for a biggen!
A quick steam and we were back to searching ....... the Furuno sounder looked the goods and I said that's gotta produce ...... Steve drops and within a short time of the baits being on the bottom Steve was on!
After about a 45 plus minute fight (maybe longer) a massive spa bath of bubbles was hitting the surface about 40 meters out from the boat and one very very big bass groper on the surface!
We gaffed it and it took every bit of help to get it over the gunnel. I said to Steve that's bigger than the State record which was 46kg on my boat by kasey back in 2009!
We got it to my home and weight it on very accurate scales( ie the one I used with Kasey State record fish) and it read 52.57 but after 3 times it fluctuated by a kilo but close enough!
Steve went into MAAC club after leaving my house and they weighed it on Certified scales and went 52.50kg and a pending new State record and Australian record as the Australian record is 49kg in NSW 2004!
Despite the conditions being very average Steve's boat eats up the conditions and very stable. Congrats to Steve on the trophy Bass Groper and happy to help mate. Steve is getting it taxidermy and the fish going to Fisheries Research after that . It was a great day with yourself and Corey (the human fish scale ha ha)
Cheers

Holy crap
That's absolutely huge. Congrats. 45 mins on manual windup from the depths would have been quite a workout.
This would have to take POTM hands done.

Congrats
That is a cracking photo to capture an Australian record - straight to the pool room (which will now have to be extended for the taxi'd fish).
Congrats Steve and kudos to Ryan.

Big Bass!!!
Firstly THANKS fella's ..... your comments are appreciated!
Sid Breeden (Sunday Times) ...... get your facts straight as you are sooooo wrong!!
Firstly;
* " Killed for sport " .... get a life as this fish is a very deep water species that suffer the bends so " NO SPORTS " .... just for the feed/fun ...... get that straight!!
* Dont compare shark issues of late to bass grouper ...... stupid
* You spelt Bass Groper wrong .... its grouper
* The weight was 52.5kg NOT 53.5kg
* Was hauled up from 350m plus not 200m
* " Clearly not a danger to any humans" ie the bass grouper caught .... your a smart man
* " Killed simply because someone boast of a state and Australian record " ...... you dickhead ..... it was a target species ie " keep the fish" as to its eating quality (very nice) and just so happens it broke the WA and Australian record there for it was claimed..... other wise it was food
The fact is its gonna be a state record and Australian record, whilst the fish will be Taxidermy it will also be going to FISHERIES RESEARCH wich is very very important!!
* "to stop wanton destruction of these magnificent harmless fish " you have no idea of these fish or numbers ........ they are plentiful " and never deemed harmfull " (stupid comment) ....... secondly, they arent under any threat hense WA Fisheries are happy with the stocks
Ps ...... Find something where you have merit on and go there .... until then dont sensationalize ..... thats right its the paper!!!

Is that the one you use to
Is that the one you use to wrap your bait with. Lol
The media nowadays is all about sensationalizing the story rather than getting it right.

Wrapping the bait is too good!
I use it for wrapping my rubbish. Rubbish paper for rubbish!!!!
My daughter-in-law did a spell writing for them as part of her Journalism degree but everything she wrote was changed so many times by the various so called Journalists above her. She soon gave up trying to write a decent piece.

Firstly well done Ryan and co for the capture, you leave many jealous .
i have found you educational and one of the most responsible to our past time over the years I have watched you on the box and read your threads.
Don't know about the rest but I really had a gut full of all the Bull dished around by media and other groups and just want to enjoy what I love to do
in my spare time in peace with out some key board warrior, media jock or try hard green person trying to make them selves feel a little better, sell a few papers
or make headlines at someone else's expense.
Keep up the good work Ryan.

Hi Ryan,Just saw this -
Hi Ryan,
Just saw this - congratulations to all involved!
I'd glad that my record is now well and truly beaten. Does this merit a return out again?
One question - how did you wrestle that fish around? The last time, moving the fish broke me. Hauling it in and out of cars/eskys/weighing scales.... not to mention the slime and off to get it taxi-dermied as well... That itself would be a monumental effort. A fish that size is in a league of its own.
Congratulations and best wishes again,
Kasey
