$800 to service 3 saltigas ouch. whats your opinion
Ive just had a z6500 saltiga, a 5500 saltiga and a 6500 saltiga in for what i thought would be a nice service but turned into needing full rebuilds on all three reels. My thought is why the f#@k am i spending big dollars on reels for them to need full rebuilds after they get a few fish i thought thats why we spend $1200 on a reel so we dont have to spend again,I can understand the z6500 getting rebuilt because its 8yrs old and it has caught alot of good fish compaired to the other 2 that are 2 and 3 yrs old and barely see the water as much as they should. To say the least i am very pissed off and starting to think i should have stuck with my stellas. Whats your opinion should i have the shits or is this exceptible from a saltiga because im starting to think it might be if all three needed the samethings replaced.

Wouldn't be far off that
Wouldn't be far off that price. I remembered sending my certate for a service years ago, after a couple of months it finally came back with a 180 charge. So with saltigas costing three times a certate, wouldn't be surprised. Figured out after this that I wouldn't send in another reel unless it was fully stuffed:) I would do my usual oiling and minor service the reel myself as I seem to enjoy it.

Don't saltigas have a 5 year
Don't saltigas have a 5 year warranty ???
My Stella came back (18 months old)... after I put it in with gearing probs ... they didn't muck around just gave me a new one. zero cost.

Are they the pre-mag sealed
Are they the pre-mag sealed models ? If yes, then it is pretty steep.
Mag-sealed models are even dearer to service due to the mag-sealed oil & mag-sealed bearings requiring special care so I won't be surprise if all 3 reels end up with that price tag.

Ive had a couple of stellas
Ive had a couple of stellas that i look after well, need full rebuilds that werent cheap. Got the replacement parts back afterwards and they were rooted (assuming they were actually out of my reels).
Unfortunately with expensive equipment, parts are expensive - but like you say, you shouldnt have to worry after paying so much initially.

Diawas 5 year warrenty is at
Diawas 5 year warrenty is at there discretion. Recently had a reel sent back to them , took 8 weeks but they covered it under warrenty thankfully.

not so sure it's completely
not so sure it's completely "at their discretion" there are parts that are not covered (bearings) and would be worth a check of their web page but think it would be worth more of a "push" to get the warranty.
FWIW and without seeing the breakdown.....(who knows it may be $450 for the Z and the rest for bearings for the newer models)....I'd be taking it further though.
EDIT:I guess it was stated all 3 needed full rebuilds. Surely a lot of this would be covered by warranty

they should be letting you know
what parts were replaced if any straight off the bat. Sounds steep to me...Actually come to think of it i wouldn,t have paid that..
A service on a reel should be that, with the reel totally stripped/cleaned/lubed and re assembled. The local tackle shop charges about $40 for a spin reel.

Just got one of mine
Just got one of mine serviced for $100 by Daiwa (through a local tackle shop). Replaced a couple bearings.
Anything major would be covered under warranty.
was it $800 direct from Daiwa?

Now a Stella convert
A similar experience is what converted me to Stellas. I sent my Z6500 to Daiwa to fix a broken bail assembly. Took 4 months to come back and had been crushed somehow. Was eventually repaired, but by then I'd bought Stellas. I service these through Oceanside tackle at a fraction of the cost. Oh, and they are beautiful reels to use.

At Campbells on the weekend
At Campbells on the weekend and ol mate behind the counter said Diawa wont honour the warranty unless you fill out the care that comes with the reel with diawa when you buy it.
I find shimano have been good and hence buy stellas, dont mined the cheaper saragosa and stradics when they are at the shop. Had a trinidad narrow series that I didnt service and it took 8 years to require work - just a drag for $60!! Got a curado bait caster that I jave used and oiled for 10 years and yet to see a proper service.
Cheers

My first question would be
My first question would be how long ago were your reels last serviced?
If you are like some on this page who boast many years between services, I am hardly surprised.
You see, I have a somewhat different perspective because I end up with these lemons.
I have a Saltiga on the bench at the moment whch may have never been serviced by the look of it. When the spool is seized rock solid on the spindle I can guarantee you will be getting a hefty bill.
Precision machines should be serviced regularly especially when exposed to a hostile environment.
I advise clients considering a high end spinning purchase: if you are the kind of person that dotes on his gear, get a Daiwa. But if you are going to let it roll around in the back of the ute for five years get a Shimano. Daiwa is high precision engineering - a thing of unsurpassed beauty to use but the downside is that such fine tolerances are easily upset. Shimano engineering is not quite so refined and as a result it is much more forgiving.
As for Mag sealed reels, Daiwa states that they absorb the cost of the ferrofluid when servicing a reel so this is not a factor in the bottom line.
It always baffles me when expensive gear comes in that has just been trashed. Must be nice to be that wealthy?
If you really want to catch fish, go where there are no people.

Don't necessarily agree with
Don't necessarily agree with the above comments regarding the better of the two, engineering wise, but have used Shimano for decades and will continue too.
No matter what reel you have, $20 reel to $1200 reel, maintenance is a must after every fishing trip.
$800 is a lot of money for servicing costs, but then again, I enjoy stripping my reels and servicing myself.

$800 is $1500 before tax on
$800 is $1500 before tax on top marginal tax rate......I suggest you buy a $10 jewelers screwdriver set, $20 worth of drag grade and Corrosion X,cbuy a few bearings at Bearings are Us, log into UTube and have a crack yourself.
I just seviced my Calcutta, Trididad and Ocea Jigger, full pull downs, clean, lube and grease and replaced a handful of bearings that I bought in Perth, all up $80, and I know it's done right plus it will be dead easy next time.

That sounds pretty average -
That sounds pretty average - not bagging the Saltiga but I have a Penn senator that is over 40 years old (was my grandfathers) gets a washdown after use and once year an internal clean out and re grease, think the drag washers were replaced at some point...

Sounds quite steep..
from my experience...
i sent my 2508 exist for service with Daiwa Aus...they took 6 weeks...cost $150..but thats after i called them at week 4 to see if they got started on the reel..
couple of weeks back got back my 5k stella and 6k twinpower...they took half the time and cost $200 for both..they also provided the old bearings they replaced..they always kept me updated and any queries they gave me a call..
daiwa make great reels but their service centre isnt the best at communicating and servicing in a timely manner...

I use to love daiwa but have
I use to love daiwa but have gone to shimano. Imo they are tougher, smoother and easier to service.
Id choke with a repair bill like that. What is the set service charge for those reels? Surely they wouldnt just go ahead and do the extra repair work with out your permission? All it takes is a phone call from them to ask if you would like to go ahead.

Self Service
As JohnF said...do it yourself unless major parts need replacing. Servicing, which predominantly involves replacing old bearings with nicely lubed up ones is an easy job.
If anyone is interested i would strongly suggest you either use YouTube or hop on Alan Tani's website. Its quite a satisfying process of knowing that the bearings are fully packed with an appropriate grease, and even better when you come back 12 months later and see that the grease is still there and no corrosion what so ever. While you are at it, get some carbon tex drag sheets and replace your washers when you get the chance.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

Issues with mag-seal reels
Alan hawks recent post advising why he has removed the Saltiga, Dogfight, Expedition and Catalina reels from his top picks can be found here.. Has to do with the mag seel fluid not being made available for sale meaning you have to get it serviced through Daiwa etc.. could explain the high costs of servicing
