Abrolhos Island Red Emperor
Fishos
Planning to do a sneaky Abrolhos island trip for a couple of nights probably around May. Have another Mackeral Islands trip planned later in the year so this Abrolhos trip will be just to get away for a couple of days. We have been over a fair few times staying at the middle island group. Over the years we have had plenty of luck on the trout, baldies and dhuies, but I wanted to ask whether many of you on here have cought Red Emperor out off there? We have never caught one nor seen one caught there. A quick search on the search bar Ive found limited info with a few people saying they caught them on charters. Anyway if anyone has caught them off there and can give me an indication on depth it would be much appreciated.
Pic of the bombies we were fishing last time we were there...... Amazing place!!
Cheers

Last time we caught red
Last time we caught red emporer was south of the southern group in deeper water somewhere in the 57mtr range, that number just sticks in my head but would need to check the GPS as I haven't been back for 5 yrs, I have never caught or seen red emp closer to the islands.

Fark me Josh what a pic!,
Fark me Josh what a pic!, I'm reading Peter Fitzsimon's book Batavia at the momemt. No wonder they marked it as deadly shipping waters back then, minefield of bombies.

Yeah that was taken about 5 years ago when we got our first drone. Pic quality would be heaps better these days. Definently have to be careful of the bombies

Batavia
Sea Kem,
I have read that book a couple of times, bloody good read, you have to feel sorry for the passengers, some of them would have died horrible deaths.Mind you when they catch the mutineers later on they give them pretty horrible deaths too. 2 of the younger fellows were set on mainland and left to defend for themselves, some say that local first australians saved them but no one really knows.

Even reading the back
Even reading the back history of them sailing around the cape of Good Hope and one Capatin having the balls to shoot straight across instead of going the long route with land in sight.
Andy you're right mate, they were absolutely ruthless, especially in Indonesia etc where they were trading spices.
The Dutch certainly had the world at their feet.
I also learnt a few years back that they were the first to settle the city of New York, very interesting history.

Personally I much more have
Personally I much more have enjoyed Islands of Angry Ghosts as it I prefer to know the documented history rather than having the gaps filled in by someone else’s imagination, but I certainly acknowledge Fitzsimmons skill in bringing this history “to the masses”.
Am at the islands now for the first time in 18 months

It's a special place
It's a special place alright! Haven't been for a long time but never saw a red. Group of mates up teher at the moment and they're doing well on baldies, spanglies and dhuies with the odd trout too.

Hey Piggy, I honestly can not
Hey Piggy, I honestly can not remember as we were chasing billfish for a tv show (we were the camera boat) so it was head down bum up getting vision for a few hours on end and lost track of time once we had hooked and released several fish.
We came across several good lumps when we broke away from the main boat heading back to the Southern Group and hitting shallower water.
They were very small lumps and holding bait, jigs did the trick.

I've got them between the dhu on the way back one trip. Smaller lumps in the 50's between southern group and gero.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Cheers for the feedback mate. We were in the 50's when catching dhu's so will scout around for some smaller stuff to see if it holds reds

Snapper Bank
Any one had much luck around snapper bank? seems like it would be a good area for a few drifts, 2/3 the way over to break the trip up?

Friends had a fish there
Friends had a fish there about 2 weeks ago on the way over and did okay. They do that to break up the trip which is understandable after crusing to Gero from Perth!

Snapper Bank
We fish snapper bank regularly when heading over. We have a fair few decent marks in that area, not right on top of snapper bank. like you said breaks up the trip and good beer stop. We done well on trout there last time we went over but we normally troll around it and pick up mackies
