I've been out in several different months. There were macks in the early season (april), but didnt get any june/july. We did still get lots of fish though, still heaps of demersals, and still lots of pelagics around later in the year (YFT's, stripeys, YTK's, sambos, shark mackies, etc).

Yep, heaps of other ones. We actually had to stop catching macks as we had too many :p

On all trips, we've thrown back (with release weight) more size dhuies than we kept :p

Heres the report (was early May now that I check). Thats mostly my fish. I think Ollie got 9 sized dhuies on jig. There were 10+ 3kg+ trout, heaps of dhuies, heaps of pinkies, heaps of spanglies (again, we had to stop fishing for them they were that thick, though there were lots of catch and release :p). Several ripper baldies too. I'm sure there were some others but cant think of off the top of my head.

Mon, 2010-08-23 17:03

I went out with Saltwater charters and highly recommend (went out 3 times this year actually :p). Certain charters fish the abrolhos in 70m of water or so. Wheres the fun in that when you can catch more fish in 10-20m of water on soft plastics where you can see the bottom!

Generally best to bring your own gear, but Craig does have both. (Might not have a huge number of SP packets though).

Trips are generally 4 days (Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon get back mid arvo). Might be a little hard getting another boat to pick you up and drop you back in Gero a day earlier :p. Though, if you booked the charter yourself, and got some mates or other people you should be able to sort a 3 day trip.

Though, it'd still be 3 continuous days on a boat with your missus. Sure you want that? lol.

Abrolhos

Mon, 2010-08-23 21:14

My Gf and i went on Mills Charters too the Abrolhos at the end of June and we couldnt fault them. The Aussie Warrior is an awesome boat comfortable clean stable and reasonably quick for a 75 footer. Also has male and female toilets and showers. Best of all we couldnt have asked any more of Bonser the skipper Rowdy and Paddy the two deckies.Really easy to get along with and just great blokes in general.

Tue, 2010-08-24 01:16

The 14 was a joke, but was prob around 10. I used heaps because, well I have lots of gear, and its good having them rigged up ready to go. We always stopped by bait bustups and whatnot for example (some charters just breeze past....).

Heres what I took last time:
1. Light combo outfit - 10lb
2. Spinning lure or plastic outfit - 20lb
3. Plastics or driftbait spin gear - 20lb
4. Long stickbait rod - 20lb
5. PE2 jigger
6. PE4 jigger
7. 8kg trolling
8. 15kg trolling
9. driftbait rod (30lb)
10. Flyrod
11. overhead combo for someone else to use or sharks at night - 50lb.

Do you need that many? No, but seeing as I had them, and I found space for them (some cord and the canopy framing helps), I had them all rigged and ready. So if we saw a small tuna school i'd chuck out a small plastic on a small rod, or if bigger then a twisty. Or we'd work the reefs with bait getting pushed up and i'd alternate between a stickbait for exploring reef/pelagics and a plastic on another rod so I could drop straight down for pinkies. We'd then troll to the next spot and my rods would have lures on them ready (usually would only use one of mine at a time). Then next spot, drop a jig down without having to rig up. Etc, etc. Just great not having to re-rig up when you get to the next spot. Just pick the outfit and you're good to go.

You'd get away with 3 no problems though. Go a 7' spin stick that can chuck 30g lures, then go a light combo overhead setup for driftbaiting, then a heavier overhead for trolling. Thats just how i'd do it, you can really do it any ways, and it depends which charter you're on. We were fishing 10-30m 90% of the time, so I could use plastics and driftbaits, and we stopped by all the bustups/birds we saw and did a fair bit of trolling. Some charters just go bottom bouncing in the 70m+ range, dont bother with bait bustups and dont do much trolling, in which case you'd only need one combo.

I find it easier. Plus you can bomb out twisties to bait schools a hell of a lot easier with a spin setup. A small baitcaster and matched rod would still be fine for plastics most of the time though.

Tue, 2010-08-24 06:18

also hlok i hav a fair few beach rods since i dont have a boat o/h s etc all new to me. I have spinfisher 850 reel and some big okuma reel forgot the name right now. Would these reels be any good for a smaller rods for the Big SPs or nah better wit smaller reel?

Those reels would be huge on

Tue, 2010-08-24 09:19

Those reels would be huge on a small rod. Ideally you'd want something smaller, and preferably with instant anti-reverse. Both will help you work the plastics more effectively. You could use a cheaper setup such as a raider/dropshot and a reel abotu $100-150 and be fine though so you dont need to spend big (especially if yuo wouldnt use it often). But it depends which charter you go on though, as if you're not fishing shallow and you're not chucking stuff at bait bustups (usually in shallower) then you wont have much use for it.

Generally, something

Tue, 2010-08-24 16:15

Generally, something 3000-4000 sized if daiwa/shimano or equivalent size/weight/strength/etc. But again, check which charter, as some dont fish shallow and a plastics/lure outfit wouldnt be very useful. The right reel could also be used for other things, e.g. spinning lures/plastics up north, or match it to a light long graphite rod and use it for chucking lures at salmon down south.
