Advice needed in the sound

Hello All,

Recently upgraded the 15 ft tinny to 16ft plate ally centre console, with 40hp yamaha and garmin 55dv gps/fishfinder.

Bassically bought the boat, to get out in the sound hunting King george, squid, snapper, herring and Tailor.

Ive been out 4 times in the boat and all ive caught is two small squid, and a heap of trumpeter, with the odd herring.

starting to get pretty defeated the early morning wakeups, doing the solo trecks, money for fuel and bait with no return.

What im after is some general areas of interest, ive bought the gps for the boat, in the hope it would get me to the spots listed on the net, but even then im not having much luck, there probably all fished out. Ive tried pamelia bank (just general spot listed on the net), harding rock (was poor weather), the garden island causeway for tailor and the area around wapet groyne/shell factory.

My general plan of attack is rock up to the spot, burley with pollard, tuna oil and run both a patanosta with two single hooks on one rod (targetting whiting), and generaly float a prawn on top for herring, 9 times out of ten im getting nailed with blowies on the prawn and trumpeter on the patanosta.

Please note i do not have the confidence and knowledge to venture out behind the islands nor is my boat suited.

ideally be pointed in the right direction for:

Squid Grounds:

Tailor:

King George:

Thanks in advance,

Any help much appreciated.

Not an expert on the sound

Not an expert on the sound or even a regular down that way but I have always done well with squid on parmelia bank, just drifting and casting jigs. In front of the shacks near naval base has always produced as well.

For your whiting anchor up on

For your whiting anchor up on a sandy patch with weed around it - the Southern Flats is a good place to start.

Chuck a couple of handfuls of chicken laying pellets under the boat and give it 10 - 15 minutes - if there's whiting around they'll find you.

And maybe try just a small ball sinker running up to your hook - and squid tentacles for bait - and just slowly retrieve through your burley trail laying on the bottom.

Took us a couple of years to narrow down our spots in the sound so be patient - good luck.

Red Dog - I'm like the OP I've put in the time with very little reward. Got a few squid but never any whiting. I've googled southern flats in cockburn sound but cant find exactly where it is. Would you mind providing more details on how to find this location, many thanks.

With Southern Flats you want

Thu, 2017-01-05 13:29

With Southern Flats you want to cast into the sand patches and if you don't get a hit within 5 seconds of the sinker hitting the bottom, wind in and recast to another spot in the patch

That way you avoid the blowie swarms and have more chance of getting a King george to jump on

There are King George around but i'd never rely on it as it's very hit and miss and the sizes are usually on the smaller side

For squid pick the right winds for drifting and it'll be the laziest easiest fishing you ever do, just stick the rod on the rod holder with the jig sitting at the right depth

squid are everywhere

as above I'm not an expert in the sound but don't burley if you are after whiting.

head to Parmelia bank and just drift the contours with a squid jig or two trailing behind. once you hook up one drift the same spot again and most times you will hook up again.
when targeting whiting do the same just drift the sand patches (don't burley) and use the small squid tentacles for bait. Again once you hook up one throw the pic and keep fishing. (Don't burley)

 hey everyone,

thanks alot for all of the replies.

ive heard that the grain terminal/mussel farms is supposed to be ok aswell ?

and the weed near the boats at the grain terminal is good for squid.

just overwhelming, you go out thinking you have a plan on a map, get out there and it all looks so much bigger in my little boat haha.

what about harding and sulphur rocks i found that on navionics, located NE of garden...

would this be a good area to look at ?

I agree

I agree with the above comments, but could add a few tips.
You have been going out in the morning at low tide. I would prefer the time leading up to high tide( late arvo at the moment )
I also found they wont bight sometimes until the sea breeze kicks in, this can bring them on the chew.
I prefer the area right in front of the power station just inside the D9 wreck. This is a nice long bank area with plenty of weed and sand patches .
Try larger hooks to help avoid the shit fish, I like number 2s up to 1/0 for fresh squid baits .

i have navionics on my tablet and spent hours hunting out potential spots, then put the co ordinates in my on boat gps.

looking at the area about the multiple blue lumps would they be areas of interest? where the depth rises significantly, is this what is refered to as lumps?

this is the area bassically inbetween power station and d9

Cant see

Thu, 2017-01-05 19:04

Cant see the picture, but yes I start on the very shallow spots until I drift onto some fish, then keep going over that spot until they are gone.
They can be in a certain depth you just need to work out what they are doing on the day.
The area starts just inside the D9 towards the shore. It goes for a while then gets deeper towards the power plant.
The whole bank runs North to South nearly all the way to Woodmans point.

I reckon they should put a couple of those towers they're dropping off Rotto in the sound as well. The sound generally is lacking any structure.

Using chicken pellets has

Thu, 2017-01-05 20:03

Using chicken pellets has been our sure fire way of catching KG's for the last ten years.

We were sitting on a patch of sand out the back of Garden Island the other day about ten metres from shore and after throwing in a couple of handfuls for the kids to have a play in about fifteen minutes we had KG's in the 30-32cm range, Herring and Silver Bream all around us.

But that's fishing - to each his own - as a newby it may be worth just giving it a try

This was in about two metres of water off the Donald St boat ramp just before the weedline - just metres off shore.

We were first timers in the sound on Tuesday. Looking for squid and whiting.  We drifted in front of Carnac, west of the channel and became frustrated after pulling nothing but blowies and trumpeter for the first few hours. The bait was engulfed within seconds every time.... Becoming quickly disheartened we anchored in the clear water of Carnac and quickly got a couple of nice sand whiting before the herring set in....in plague proportions.  We then went back to the east side of the channel on the bank in 2-4m of water and managed to get 5 nice squid which made our day.

The whiting would have to be quick to get to a bait with all the small bream around, and what a lack of blowies...amazing.

head in between carnac and garden, the reefs on the southern side of that channel, burley there, have always had herring swing in after burley was in the water,
chuck a herring on a balloon as a livie aswell, have seen couple YT kings around there also.

My advice would be to watch

Sun, 2017-01-08 15:29

My advice would be to watch the weather. If you get good weather make the trek out in between garden and Carnac (10km from woodies) anchor up at night and get a steady burly going. When we have chased snapper I've chucked a little rod out and within 3 seconds you have a herring. We just kept bringing them in one after another until we had 36(release small ones) keep in mind most where released we only kept a couple. But we would of caught over 40( and I was the only one fishing for them. Rig doesn't matter I just had a jig head tied directly to the Line but just a running sinker and small hook will work. This has happened almost every time we chase snapper there just plagues of herring. Good luck.
