Advice on setting up Popper Rigs
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Sat, 2011-08-20 22:59
I am sick and tired of snapping off expensive poppers (weighted). I use braid and tend to use a leeder which matched my braid. I use albright knots to attach the leeder. I am downsizing to lighter carbon rods with Fugi guides and the leeder knots are causing me pain.
Do any of you purists have some advice? Should I do away with the long leeder for popping? I am about to LOL

Yes well....
Doesn't really answer my question. Let's talk about how long the leeder really needs to be. Should a knot be allowed to pass through the eyes with a weighted popper? Should it just be a short leeder? We are talking about braid from the beach here. Oh,and seeing lurses dissapear into the sundet......

trace test
And to to add a bit more to my question... How do you match leeder test to braid test. as in, if I use 20lb braide what leeder should I use?

same thing was happening to me
a few years ago. I only use extra long leaders when fishing for large long pelagics now (eg. spanish mackeral). All of my other leaders are kept short (after the guide tip).
Fishin for a feed and fun.

Try a better knot!
Try a better knot, something like a GT or FG.
I used to use double my mainline BS for my leader, but really most mono breaks at 2x it's rating, so sometimes I use line as light as 1x my mainline..

Personally don't use a long leader if poppering off the beach, usually have 20-30lb braid and 40-60lb leader. Leader short enough not to be going down the guides. Not sure there's a need for a long leader if your beach fishing unless maybe you have a lot of reef around... But even then.

in casring forums they reccomend 10x the poundage/ounce. Ie 4oz wight/40lb line at a minimum. The leader length should be the position you would normally cast your lure plus 2 to 3wraps around your reel. Also use the slimest knot possible. Ie fg or pr, if your not confident with those knots a wind on is best via bimini and catspaw.

this is what i use anyway. Otherwise as people have said use a short leader. I just dont like using my finger on the braid to cast. Gets a bit sore after a few hundred casts.

Agree with above, keep the leader short and the knot out of the guides. Try the GT knot if your wanting to have longer leader and cast the knot through the guides. Make sure your really take care to clean up the knots tag ends. I usually melt them down with a lighter, not always easy to do on a windy beach.

Just did 7 days in Christmas
Just did 7 days in Christmas Island, popping and stickbaiting every day. Hundreds of casts with 100-150g chuggers and stickbaits and not one snap off.
We run FG knot(dont use enything else, learn it, you will never go back) and leader about 1.5 to 2 times the breaking strain of the braid, and run about 3-4 m of leader, just short enough so it does not wind onto the reel but almost all the way back to the reel with about 1.5 m of free line back to the lure for max cast distance.
This setup gives you maximum protection against getting reefed (I pulled one red bass out from the reef), and the FG knot goes through the guides easily and safely. Also, running a long leader stops the potential to snap off on the last runner when casting if a short leader is used and braid in on all runners.
If running albright and less so GT knots, they dont go through the guides well and with heavy leader (130 and 170lb) you risk snapping off a guide or two if the tag end catches......ouch!
Finish off with a 4 turn uni for terminal and thats it, easy, and foolproof. TimVB had never tied a FG knot before the trip, and after day one he was doing them on the boat in 18 knots of wind, and we never had one knot fail the whole trip, and we hooked some big fish. Make sure you cinch up the knot REALLY REALLY tight after the first half hitch, then continue on with the rest of the half hitches. This is the onlysecret to this knot, make sure you cinch up mega tight.

Hey Vince if you are just throwing like yesterday then I use a short bit of mono tied to a straingt swivel Just use about 2 foot of mono tied to a snap one end and a straight swivel the other then straight onto the braid. So far i have had very few snaps due to casting. I was only fishing reasonablely 15 lb light yesterday and throwing size 3 and 4 ricther plugs.

Cheers for some great info guys.
I'm going to stear clear of longer leaders as you suggest Graham. JohnF's post is very helpful and I will be practicing the art of the FB knot. The albright knot has the leader tag at the wrong end and that's what is causing me grief.
I'll drop down to 30lb mono leaders for my bait soaking rigs. Oh, and JohnF, I did rip the tip eye out of my Lemax a couple of weeks ago - spewing! It's fixed now.

I dont even use a leader for tailor, I use red power pro or mono main line and tie a snap swivel (for ease of lure change) straight to it and fish as light a rod as practically possible. The only time Id use a leader for lure fishing id use fluoro to eliminate line visibility, or mono for trolling for bigger fish for a bit of shock absorbtion that a heavy rod cant provide. If the braid hurts your finger from casting, then you can go to any woolworths store and its lane 6 I think, they sell various cans of Hardenup which should fix it.
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

leader
I use the same scale of 1 0z of weight , 10 lb of leader .I use Varivas Tapered Leaders which are 13 mtr long and go from 18 lb on one end to 70 lb at the business end. If I am using a shorter beach rod I just shorten the length a little.

For what its worth, I read a Western Angler article sometime in the last 12 months that suggested 5kg leader for every 1 ounce of weight being cast. Which is pretty much what snapper said above.

if it's for tailor then a 60cm leader would be ample, 60lb jinkai or something like that to either a improved albright or a FG knot, no need for wind on's or twisted leaders at that size it'll just get too expensive, the snapping of the poppers will be that albright coming undone, when you finish it go though the hole at the end 3 times instead of 1, lube the knot real good and make sure it dresses right and you'll have no issues, a thicker leader helps the braid bite into the leader too.
