Advice on snorkling problem

Hi guys,

Since my last trip to Kalbarri and since i bought a go pro camera i have been doing some snorkling.

One prob that had pissed me right off is i keep getting a blocked ear afterwards. This will last a week or so.

Will simply blocking ear with say blue tack or something stop it or is it a pressure thing that i cant avoid?

Only snorkling 2 meters max.

Heading to exxy in june and want to avoid a blocked ear for a week lol

Dont you shake your head each side to get the water out after each session? they do sell plugs that blocks out water but it also blocks out sounds which isnt a good thing.

Blue tack

Tue, 2011-03-15 12:19

You mustn't put anything in to block your ear while snorkeling - you need to be able to equalise the pressure, even for reasonably shallow dives. Putting anything in your ear that blocks the water getting in creates a sealed air space next to your ear drum - you don't want to do that or you run the risk of bursting your eardrum.

Suggest getting some Aqua Ear from the Chemist as to previous posts, it really does work...

Cheers,

Judy

bruised?

Tue, 2011-03-15 12:26

If it's not fixed by the drops etc, then it could also be that you bruised the drum and/or middle ear.  If you don't equalise early enough, it is quite common even at 2m - especially with repeated duckdives.  Otherwise you might be equalising too hard and bruising it with too much pressure.  Best way is a slow, calm duck dive and equalise as soon as you start the descent - if you wait until you feel pressure, it is too late!

I used to be an instructor and have seen it all - some people are lucky and don't need to equalise at all and some people are unlucky and need to equalise from the second they stick their head under.

He may not be equalising at all as it's only 2 metres (wrongly) so may be nothing to do with water in the ear.

Aqua Ear

Tue, 2011-03-15 12:29

I've had issues with my ears foreva and have found this product is the go.

commonly wax will build up in your ears, trapping the water between it and the drum and seem like it has gone all the way thru, but its unlikely the water managed to penetrate to your inner ear

prob best to go see your GP then use the Aqua Ear each time you swim.

i know your problem well. i was "snorking" for a couple of years without much success. as soon as i realised that i was supposed to be "snorkleing",  all my problems stopped!!

dont put anything in your ears. get some ear candles, or flush them out with warm water and a syringe (with no needle point....).

or, just plain toughen up princess!!

haha scotto Marc i think most

haha scotto

Marc i think most people experience some sort of blockage when spending time in thew ater. But usually clears for most people quickly.

go with the suggestion of equalising. i notice pressure build up at 2-3 metres when duck diving, and i always equalise(i get down to around 8 meters). Suggest dong this

Methods ive found that work.

close your mouth, block your nose and try blow air out your mouth (everyone knows this one)

wriggle your jaw side to side.

swallow

Hi Marc, I do alot of diving,

Tue, 2011-03-15 14:41

Hi Marc, I do alot of diving, swimming and surfing and over the years have had issues with watter getting trapped in my ears. This is caused by having narrower hearing canals and with a little bit of wax build up the water can become trapped in the ear. Once this happens infection sets in and the inner ear swells blocking it up leaving the feeeling of water being in your ear.  After a trip to the Doc's to have it syringed they have prescribed some drops called Sofradex or Otodex. Both work well to clear up the infection. As previously mentioned Do not put anything in your ear while diving as you will not be able to equalise. Use Auqa Ear to dry up your ear canals at the end of each day in the water and you can use ear candles or waxsol drops to eliminate the build up of wax. Hope this has helped.Good luck.

Do not put anything to block

Tue, 2011-03-15 15:12

Do not put anything to block the ears, if you dive down the pressure will push it in and you will have lots of dramas!

This will sound gross, but don't wash your ears out with soap the day before.  The natural oils help keep the water out as well.

Go Pro's

Tue, 2011-03-15 16:53

I have a go pro, 5mp HD, it's good for filming, especially free diving when shooting fish and filming sharks etc, I have not had any real probs with the focus. Used it when diving the Swan wreck a couple of weeks ago and the only problem is that I didn't charge it enough!.

Excellent value for money.

Doctor

Tue, 2011-03-15 19:01

Take a visit to a doctor who does diving medicals and get him to have a squiz in your ear, could even be a perforated ear drum without you having noticed it happening. Better to know everything is ok before you try something that could stuff it up completely.

i have the same prob. i wear 2 hearing aids which can cause a wax build up so my ears tend to block up after a swim . i am another one that will vouch for Aqua ear. works great.as it was mentioned as well the size of the ear canals by Spicey , i have the same prob so maybe this is a common thing getting the blocked ears, even happens to me in the shower
