After watching every vid on youtube on WA flathead on soft plastics.
I need to change my lines a bit. SO I wanan get rid of the black braid th ey put on at Oceanside, but I am dammed if I know what lb it is... So if anyone has an idea on what sorta line Would work well up river, Ascott,guildford/Canning bridge/ etc I am all ears. I have 6lb flurocarbon as leader. Usually about 1m length onto my hard plastic so I assume softs will be same??..
I have looked at Fireline an all sorts of stuff in between. red green blue black white... u name it lol...
What do people usually go for on light gear?... 4 lb fireline for braid ? (its only one I am familiar with). 8-10 lb fluro for leader ??... Trying not to stunkt my casting distance so Didnt wanan go to heavy. No real experiance using soft plastics like 2" Grubs in bloodworm color. Not to mention the JH, I saw on that vid I posted in other thread... I think it was, they use 1/8 oz jighead "fuse"brand prehaps?

Upriver I use 6lb YGK and 2m
Upriver I use 6lb YGK and 2m of 6lb Yamotoya leader. I have 4lb YGK on my other spool which casts a big better than the 6lb but I have 2lb leader on that for surface fishing for whiting and it won't last long in snag country.

Trouble I have, using 2m of
Trouble I have, using 2m of leader, the swivels wont go through the eyes. I cant tie that knott to join 2 lines for shit .... (practiced over 50 times probably.... So I use swivvels generally with uni/Cinch knot. I use 60 lb swivvels, real tiny little ones, but again the slightest hookup on eyes, an your line stops dead. So I generally only use 1m or less. I looked at my leader jsut then, it seems its 8lb fluro So If I use that+ the 4lb ya think of either brands.... should be ok. The 8lb leader does limit my cast a bit, but I dont wanna lose it in snags be it up river or Canning beach (nice little spot for flattys).
Does color of your braid play into the fish seeign your lines at all ?... Alot fo the guys on youtube seem to use the red fireline for some reason.

Knot
hey Tassy Google up a surgeons knot to join your leader to braid it is a fairly easy knot and fairly effective.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

The short leader & swivel
The short leader & swivel won't be doing you any favours. Get rid of that swivel & practice a joiner knot until you get it right.

I haven't lost a lure using
I haven't lost a lure using 6lb yet in some very snaggy country mate so get yourself some decent 4-6lb leader to go with your 4lb braid and you will improve your strike rate and be able to cast further.
Ditch the swivel and keep working on those knots too, you need to watch your line to see when it goes slack after twitching so that you know when you are working the plastics off the bottom and any weight up the line is going to disconect you with the jighead. A double uni knot is a good starter knot for tying braid to leader but it does bang the guides. I use an improved albright for my 2lb leader and an FG knot for anything bigger and for the FG knot I bought an EZ Knot but used this guy's video to learn initially https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52uWL43hUbw.

I could be wrong but I've
I could be wrong but I've always assumed that the braid colour is for the angler's benefit i.e being able to see the line against the water especially when setting baits to allow the fish to run with it.

If it was put on at Oceanside
If it was put on at Oceanside there's a good chance it's their Extreme brand. Personally I use 5lb Powerpro or 3lb Fireline. I run about 2 rod lengths of 4lb Nitlon Flourocarbon leader down to the lure. Improved Albright knot for joining leader to braid. Once you have been shown the Albright in person you will be able to tie it easily.

How do you stop the leader
How do you stop the leader knot picking up line off the spool and getting wind knots? I make sure the leader knot is just off the spool now as I had a horrific time with it picking up the 4lb braid but it was using a double uni knot.

Never been an issue for me on
Never been an issue for me on light gear with the Albright, I just cast out as per usual. I only have that problem when I fish heavier gear off the beach. With the heavier gear I only run about a meter of leader & I have the knot hanging below the tip when I cast.

I use 3lb crystal fireline
I use 3lb crystal fireline with about 1.5 rod lengths of 6lb leader usually and never had the fireline break before the leader, even when run under snags and around pylons. I use either the albright knot or double uni, but find that because of the backward-facing tag of the mono/fluoro the double uni casts better through the guides (I generally cut the tag ends as short as possible).
I also use this on my heavier gear (up to 80lb) and often run 80lb+ mono leader about 10m in length and bimini the braid attached to a double uni or albright. When you cast just make sure you point the rod in the direction the line is coming off and the knot should rarely catch.
