Albany Salmon 2013 report
Well the 2nd annual Albany fishing trip nearly didn't happen this year at all, crew were dropping like flies, one bloke was in Broome, another was at the Abrohlos, I mean pfft, Albany salmon is where it's at! Original plan was to hit up Dunsborough in the boat but the reports dried up and the fish weren't being that reliable, so I made the call to ditch the boat and do a lightning day trip down to Albany as I had one availbale day and had to get my bro back to mum and dad by the evening so he could go on a week long trip down to Bremer Bay the following day. F#@K fifo...
I literally scrounged up a crew, my brother, a mate I hadn't seen in over a year and a boyfriend of a family friend that I had never met.
Drove onto Albany Hwy at 4.45am and arrived at the public toilet on the beach at 9am, I had been touching cotton for the last hour!
Tried a spot where the fish escaped us last year, first two casts had a million and one herring hitting the stickbait, even splashing at my double uni braid to mono knot. Walked 15m to my right and bang-on, salmon all over the stickbait. After a bit of rock dancing I lifted the first salmon onto the rocks. The other boys were still rigging up at that stage.
I had a couple more hits but no hookups so I made the call to walk further around the corner.
As we were walking to the rocks it was funny to see the same family standing on the exact same rocks as last year.
We also got to fish off the same rocks as last year and we started where we left off, with my first cast resulting in the fattest salmon I have ever caught, unfortunately the photo doesn't do the size of this fish any justice.
For the next 5hrs it was just about non stop action. The fish were much larger this year, absolute stonkers. I was devastated to lose 2 horses on the fly gear aswell..
Enjoy the pics
The waxwing...
An old friend. .
After 9hrs of driving and 950kms for the day I pulled into the driveway at 9.30, what a day!
Cheers
Beau.
Ps. If there are any double ups in photos of whatever I apologise in advance as I've done all this from my phone and it's pretty difficult to keep track!

Until you see it in person, you have no idea. I think I'm going to make it tradition that every year someone has to grow the mo for the annual Albany trip.

Why even bother commenting mate? All the photos bar 2 or 3 we are holding fish with bent elbows so I don't know what you're
getting at really? Maybe learn the characteristics of different camera lens types before trying to be a smart ass

Hey guys - maybe a stupid
Hey guys - maybe a stupid question, but how do you normally land your salmon there? You have a long net? Or gaff? Or just pull them up by the leader?
Am heading down on the weekend but don't have a long net, don't want to gaff them and usually run light leaders so in a bit of a jam!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

We've been using nets mate,
We've been using nets mate, and like Ben said if you get a good spot you can lead them into rock pools and clamber down and nab them. I pulled one up using 50lb leader I hated every second of it lol. I'd recommend getting a long net as there aren't that many spots along there you can land the fish another way

Generally a long net will
Generally a long net will make it easier but if the swell is down like last year you can just swim them into little pools and land them by hand
