Ali canopy for a 79 series four door

Okay, picking up a new 79 series four door in about 5 weeks, looking at Ali canopy options...wanting side doors and roof rack, prefer spare wheel holder and ladder on back. Setting up for camping inside. I expect to have to upgrade rear suspension but anyway after leads, recomendations, even consider canopys forsale already set up...o needs to be remvable with wind down legs...gotta take the boat camping.

Anyway what is out there...even photos of rigs set up for more ideas, cheers

 You'll be paying top dollar

Tue, 2016-08-16 20:25

You'll be paying top dollar over in the west for a decent ally canopy!!

A couple of things i can reccommend are - Definately try and get the doors to seal on inside ( hard to explain without a pic ),  If i get around to it i'll get a pic up on here or PM me for my number and i'll text you a couple.  Most of the canopys i see here in the west close against the side of the box with some sort of seal, that to me is asking for trouble.

Mine is dust proof and water proof after about 7 years without changing the foam that it rests against.

If it closes against the side of the box then a stick/branch could easily penetrate it and create dramas, also as soon as the seal wears it will also start to let dust and water pass.

I also have a continous plastic hinge one the top of the doors that creates its own seal, I have two side doors and a rear door. The side doors get opened and closed almost daily and the hinges are still holding up well which has suprised me so i can also reccommend them.

Thirdly, Get a reinforced roof and a rack directly on top of the box.... I dont get why guys get a canopy built then have a air gap then their rack??!!??!!

Keep the rack on the top of the box and its not so high to lift heavy long crap that doesnt fit inside and also keeps the thing more areo D.

On a dual cab you will not have all the room for all the fruit but if you plan it well you'll tick most boxes.

My father inlaw has a fold out queen size bed that comes out the rear of his but he has the luxury of having an F250 single cab tray back with shit loads of room.

I have grand plans for my next one when i upgrade my dual cab, I'll drive back across to SA and get another one built back there. Mine is a basic model but very well built and is definately one of the best $4500 i've ever spent!!

Feel free to PM me for a few pics mate and be sure to keep us posted here as its something i'm sure lots of fellas here will be interested in.

Tim

If your on Instagram check out user "79series" had his canopy built by outback customs (outbackcustoms.com.au), if I didn't have a young family my 76 would be traded in for a 79 and I would see these guys, located in Cabooture Qld tho

Yewie i just checked out the

Wed, 2016-08-17 09:52

Yewie i just checked out the instagram post and yep she's a very nice looking box but a pretty basic setup that would have cost a shitload. He's spent alot of money on getting it to look.

Excuse my ignorance but do the 79's have a spare wheel underneath? I assume so? I dont get why you would want to take up valuable space and remove a tyre from the useless space underneath you're ute only to put it on the back of the canopy where surely there could be a better use of that space? Also...... With the new tyre repair kits i've done away with dragging a second spare around with me, admittedly if i was going through the Anne Beadell or the likes then sure i'd think about taking a second spare but really if you have a good spare the likely hood is very small that the 2nd will come into play before you have had a chance to get the puncture fixed.

I mentioned mine has a rear door as well as the sides, day to day i dont use the rear door but its definately handy when packing/unpacking and day to day camping use. Its the one door you can leave open and drive if you have to move something big from A - B.

 Reason for the 2 spares

Wed, 2016-08-17 11:19

Reason for the 2 spares could be different offset to make the wheel tracks the same, I don't have a locker on my rear diff, just the factory lsd, she struggles on really soft sand, with corrected offset they float over it no worries

Not the best photo, this is

Wed, 2016-08-17 15:54

Not the best photo, this is what i had made up it had mounts for jack stands all doors were resessed and sealed gas struts, he made up internally exactly how i asked.

it cost less than 5k off top of my head but i got it painted myself.

I would recomend medium springs with airbags if yor going to make it an on off thing .. otherwise she will be sagging in no time and you will wondering why people are highbeaming you at night time

Have you taken the box off

Thu, 2016-08-18 00:24

Have you taken the box off the back many times since you've had it built Gyprock?

Initially i was going to get jacking points and remove mine when needed but in the end she's on there permanent and nowadays if i need some soil or the likes i just throw the trailer on.
