All the ocean in the world

Was out fishing on Saturday of Hillarys with another mates boat with us. We were doing ok with a couple of good fish on board then this boat comes over from no where and stops yes stops about 20 feet in front of my drift. I just don't get it WTF is wrong with these dudes. Mark my spot , we have words then he pisses off. He just didn't give a shit and I think he does this quiet often by the way it was done, followed your drift then stops once the ground is found and pings. I'm just wondering is there a solution to stop these dickheads?

Mon, 2012-05-21 21:27

Unfortunatly pinging happens all too much. I was actually fishing out of jurien bay a few weeks ago and stopped in a random spot as the decky had to crap, as he was butt naked hanging off the back of the transom a boat came rite upto us and started to drift about 10m's away from us! I dont know if they knew what was happening or not but they hung around and we left while they were still drifting over no mans land.

ASSHOLES...

Mon, 2012-05-21 22:05

Assholes have worked out that there are absolutely NO consequences for acting like absolute c**ts on the water - have to agree with Versus - take a photo and post it up!

I refuse to fish off the metro area on weekends - fishing is supposed to be fun and relaxing!!

We ended up following three dickheads back to Ocean Reef Boat Harbour one Saturday afternoon (after THEY followed us around all f**king day) - it ended badly for them initially, but, then the two of us went through months of shit dealing with lawyers and court!!

Now we just pull up stumps and move on with our tails between our legs! LOL.

a suggestion is if you see a boat coming your direction, just keep drifting (off your spot) let him follow you on nothing until he leaves.

Usuaully you spot a boat a fair distance off which gives you enough time to drift off your spot.

ask permission

Tue, 2012-05-22 10:19

I was out with my brother in law on Saturday and went out to one of my spots 15nm off Mindarie I have marked on the GPS. When we arrived another boat was fishing the lump. Did the right thing and asked if it was OK to fish the lump. All 3 onboard said OK. kept our distance and both boats had a ball catching fish. When we left again thanked them for allowing us to join them. If he had objected would have moved on and come back later.

If people do the right thing I am sure most would not object, but to just rock up and ping the spot is wrong.

Old fart

Tue, 2012-05-22 15:06

won't fish anymore from the back of Rotti to the bank, too many pingers, way to many charters also there now compared to 20yrs ago, as some of you have said, hours of searching, learning, fishing, fuel, bait,  time etc lost to bloody pingers.

We do all our fishing from Leeman, out of school holidays/Easter etc, no pingers.  Pingers are the scurge of the ocean, too damn lazy to look for their own ground or is it most can't read a sounder correctly.

Heard a funny story, a friend saw a friend on the water back of Rotti, friend decideds to come over and have a yak to friend already fishing, anyway wife is bored, as hubbie talking, talking, so friend's wife drops her line in, sitting listening, next minute she is hooked up to a nice fish, thinking she was snagged, hubbie stops talking  comes over and says no you ^%%$# b...tch you've got a good fish on, wind it up, so she obeys, winds up a massive 19kg dhuie, much to the disgust of the friend that had been fishing that spot before they come over for a yak.

its a dilemma

Tue, 2012-05-22 17:30

if your in an out of the way place say at the islands or north of Kalbarri etc and you see another boat.

Do you go past and say hello (always handy to know who's around) taking the risk of it being either a social bunch of characters or a sinker throwing/bung stealing phsyco?

I know not to do it in Perth waters now but on a weekday after a few days onboard I sometimes do (tentatively now!) out at the islands.

Wed, 2012-05-23 12:58

Agree 100% Travy37, these are not "your" spots, the ocean belongs to everyone. I never have, and never will "ping" a spot where somebody else is fishing, but if I am heading to my favourite patch of reef, and somebody else happens to be fishing it, a decision has to be made. If room permits I'll join in, usually with a friendly wave, but I wouldn't be fishing on top of others, would simply move on. I don't understand the big aggression thing going on here? It's not like they are fishing in your garden pond. On the other hand if they are fishing right on top of you so that lines are tangling etc, then you have every right to tell them to move on (do it politely the first time, if you have to ask a second time by all means get aggro!)

If it's not pinging when you are fishing on a jetty and somebody joins you, why is it different if you are in a boat?

Its not about owning 'your'

Wed, 2012-05-23 13:12

Its not about owning 'your' spot and having exclusive fishing rights, its about putting in the hard time to find it, only to have someone come over and steal all that hard work from you. No-one expects no-one else will ever fish their spot, and people dont tend to get (as) upset when they find out someone is already fishing their marked spot when they arrive to it (well, maybe a little disappointed that you cant fish it at that time). No-one gets annoyed when someone fishes they're spot when they're not there if they found it themselves. So its not about someone fishing your spot, its about someone just taking all your hard work.

Imagine if you found a nice woman and took her home. I'm sure you'd accept you're not her first, and probably not her last. But it'd be a little different if you're getting some action in bed, and another bloke jumps in there with you and says "yeah, i'll have a bit of that too" ;)

Ok, well, thats a pretty crappy analogy, but just for a bit of a laugh. Hopefully you got the point I was making.

Love the analogy, well done!

I see your point and obviously there is frustration when somebody "bypasses" the hard work in finding their own spot, although I still have to say, how do you know that they didn't already have that spot themselves? There still seems to be a huge amount of aggro towards "asshole pingers" based on a pretty flimsy assumption that they didn't know a particular spot before arriving?

Anyways, that's my 2c worth, I thought fishing was a relaxing way to spend some enjoyable time on the water, with like minded enthusiasts.

Wed, 2012-05-23 13:53

The problem is with the "I already had that mark" is that its a pretty weak argument in the hands of the already unscrupulous (i.e. pingers). If you have the mark you can always come back and fish it later when the boat on it has already moved. Better to err on the side of caution than piss someone off.

Say you own a supermarket and you catch someone shoplifting. It may be genuine that they meant to pay for it and would once they realised their mistake, but really, is that going to be the majority of the cases? ;) What about someone borrowing something from your yard? "Oh, but I was going to give it back".  Maybe they were, but which do you think is more likely ;)

All fair and reasonable

Wed, 2012-05-23 14:40

All fair and reasonable points there.

Maybe I am too gullible or just like to assume that everone has the same morals standards as myself, obviously this won't always be the case. I still think there seems to be an over reaction on the aggression side of things, but this probably reflects some wider issues in society, not just fishing.

PS, maybe we need another forum section "Analogy of the day", I'm sure you could come up with some more crackers!

A shang eye loaded with your old bait would be a nice way to get the message across, or if you know what their car looks like a nice subtle message left across their windscreen in soap will work as well.

My example

Wed, 2012-05-23 17:47

When I was in bunghole a mate provided me a GPS mark that was 28km out.

So I steam out there using my handheld GPS and low and behold there are 6 boats in the general vicinity.

I've been fishing for 35 years and know that 10 metres can mean all the difference in finding a new lump full of fish.

So I drift over the GPS mark observing the sounder; not fishing as no rods deployed.

Good lump but not holding fish today. But I still mark the spot.

Off I go to fish elsewhere.

I bet you all those 6 boats thought I was pinging them.

Not in my books.

Hands up who looks for lobster floats to find ground....... oh my there's a few I bet, no cray boat so mark the GPS = ping

Matt

Work hard all night to pull a chick only to be pipped at the post by some other dick head who takes her home. Go home and have a pull, it's still enjoyable and pretty much ends up with the same result, you gets ya rocks off and enjoy it :) Still hard work but who cares cause most blokes dont care about the women...............

If ya see my green Noble, move on it's my ocean

I think its straight forward

Wed, 2012-05-23 20:06

I think its straight forward if a boats on a spot fuck off somewhere else and come back later, that way no one ever fishes MY SPOT and all people are happy . Come near another boat and you are going to be named and shamed and photographed as pingers ,simple . I agree no one owns the ocean but if you stick to the above theory everyones happy and i can tell you i have found bloody good ground by just driving another mile away and looking around for new spots its a good way to explore the vicinity.

I agree George,its just good

I agree George, its just good vibes to head of somewhere else if someone is on "your Spot".But if you are already fishing it and a boat pulls up in your drift and drops in on you as a surfer would say then thats not on.I am sure all the surfers dont own the ocean as well but they get pretty pissed off if someone is on their wave.Same principal i think.
