I had mine
I had mine (drag) upgraded by Jim in Westminster (sorry cant find his number someone else might post it) was the best thing i ever did to the reel. I still like to use an Alvey as my big bait set up for the beach, being lefthanded options are limited + the Alvey holds a ton of line and has never failed me .
After the upgrade just a 1/4 turn of the star drag and it is solid but smooth . Before that you would have to screw it up , and up, and up before it realy loaded up the rod and reel .

Surf Champion lever drag
Just cleaned up my 650 surf champion lever drag. It has what look like teflon drags. Certainly different to the older Alvey drag material. John Deviot used to do aa carbon fiber/stainless steel set for the Alveys before he retired. I have three of his set ups in various Alveys :) happy days. Very low release pressure and smooth all the way to sunset setting. I use Cals Drag Grease (American) on the carbon fiber washes.
Check the Alvey web site for the newest drag material.
Would be interested in a post or PM about what you come up with, I guess grantarctic1 would too.
