Has anyone installed an Anchor Winch on their Baron?
What winch?
Got any pics of the install?
Happy with it?

I'd be interested in this also, getting older I'd like to press a button and have the anchor pulled up for me.

What type/brand etc?

Lonestar

I have a lonestar on my Barcrusher and love it.

It was installed by the previous owner and as a guess i would say its 5 years old. Has been super reliable and has heaps of grunt - It managed to even bend a sarca anchor.

One thing I would recomend is get a winch with a free fall option. Mine does not have it and although i manage to anchor up just fine it's more of a safety thing in my mind that if a big swell hits with a snagged anchor i can get the winch to free spool.

I'm also glad i have a drum winch as i have mates with windlass which are a PITA (but may be incorrectly set up).

 Agree with this, Powering

Agree with this, Powering down and trying to keep the boat in the same spot to hit a mark isn’t that fun or accurate.. I’ve got an old muir storm vr600 (which has just died).. looking at getting a drum winch with free fall option at some point.

Lonestar

Going with Lonestar on the new Barcrusher after a lot of research. Given the thrashing they get up in the anchor well they appear very well made. I opted against free fall as direct drive is the way to go IMO. Didnt want any one way bearings or magnetic breaks to complicate what should be a very simple over engineered drum and motor that just has forwars / reverse same speed. I really wanted something that requires bugger all maintenance / repairs.

The GX2 drops at 46m per minute which is fast enough for me, also they were half the price including the anchor rope / chain / sock and roller than Stressfree was from Barcrusher.

If youve got 15mins Check out the winch shootout done not too long ago. If anything it's just entertaining to see what they put everything through in the test environment. Also it stirred up a bit of "action" between Stress free and Lonestar lol.

Cheers,

Disco.

I have a stressfree with freefall which was installed by previous owner. (very good quality) After having freefall, I wouldn't want any other type. I find it really good when wanting to let more rope out after the anchor is grounded. It only pulls out as required by drift or reverse speed which virtually eliminates over run. The problem with power out or down is that drums are prone to over run which ends up messy..

The only real downside to drums that I see is limited rope capacity. My limit is effectively about 25m for fishing. Consider the more expensive thinner ropes on a drum for more capacity....

Mine was put in slightly off center which really must be avoided because it causes proplems with spooling...
