I thought you said it was cranking as normal with battery charged?

Did you leave it cranking for 3 minutes

Seriously, though, pull starter apart, may be just stuck brushes, or maybe its never seen a fully charged battery before

Take 5 and think

Fri, 2017-12-22 17:16

If the starter started to smoke did it smell like varish or shelack burning,(if it did smell of those type of things then I think you will find the insulation on the windings have had it and I am afraid the starter is cactus. if not have a real good look at all the connections that terminate at the starter. Pull them off clean them up with a bit of wet and dry or a fine cut file.
If the connections are bad this can cause things to start smoking at were they terminate at the pole.

Then I would do what has been suggested above strip down the starter looking at the commutator (the bit the bushes come in contact with), brushes, internal connections, all of it and give it a real good clean, look for broken wiring cracked brushes.

When you have done all of that make up a gerry rig or use jumper leads and test the starter on the bench with the car battery.

If all ok put starter back on motor don't connect it to any of the boats wiring, using jumper leads or gerry rig try starter motor to get motor going (in a water tank green rubbish bins are good) take the prop off so you can rev motor up a bit and see how motor runs when starter is not connected in any electrical way to motor.

If no problems then I would give every inch of wiring in your boat a real good inspection, you have got nothing else to do right LOL and you could save a lot of dollars for the sake of a bit of time.

Just my tuppence worth

Your right I don't have  anything better to do haha this is what has happened my earth has come of while operating on my battery discovered the terminal cracked today while actually settled down and gave it a good look over after fixing that started and bang smoke. Stripped the starter down and I've stripped more starters than I want to this is the most fried out starter. Never smelt anything so potent in my life I guess the acronym about boats is true should have stuck to land based haga oh well now to wait to January
