I'd be going a heavy duty

I'd be going a heavy duty reef anchor, at least a reef pick will bend out if it gets stuck.

Plus will do alot less damage to the reef

reef pick

We use a reef pick at Exmouth with approx 12 mm diameter rods that bend easy enough (have a long ali pole on board). When we fish off my cousins 18 foot Pacemaker he uses a four prong reef pick with 12mmm diameter rods with electric winch. The anchor you have on the boat at the moment would almost certainly get lost in 30/40 out from tantabiddi.

anchoring is only allowed

anchoring is only allowed when you have to manually pull it up otherwise its cheatingLaughing

btw its not a bad idea to change ours over for the trip especially when we are looking at anchoring up to go for a dive

Dunno, that 92% chance of recovering it never seems quite high enough after you paid $220 for it!

and you dont want to swim for it

Swimming down to free an anchor is not an option for me at Exmouth. Even in the shallow stuff.

Reefie

Only ever use the reefie, mainly coz of the reasons stated above, mind you, I don't have 5+ metres of boat to hold. :)

Anchoring

To be honest I have found that if you need a sand anchor to hold up there, you are fishing on the wrong ground anyway.  A reef pick is by far the most useful anchor there, but I reckon that most of the time, drifting is by far the better option.  If you anchor for any long periods of time and get a shoal of fish feeding, it won't be long before the sharks move in and you have to move out anyway.

Make sure that you have something on the boat with which you can re-bend your reef pick.  They often straighten when being recovered and a 10mm pick can be a bit of a struggle to re-shape by hand.  Often you will find a fitting on the boat that will suffice but otherwise you might need to take a bit of pipe with you.
