Any auto sparkies answer a quick question?

Hi fellas,

So I picked up a new colorado a couple of days back and I'm gonna wire up some spotties. However I just wanted to ask any auto sparkies if there can be any problems with tapping into the high beam feed at the back of the headlights?... I've had a read of a few forums and I wanna make sure that it won't cause any dramas with the ecu's in the car... I've read that the amarok has a few dedicated plugs under the dash for picking up feeds specifically to avoid dramas with the canbus(?!?!)... Curious to see if anyone knows of similar for the colorado.

Ive wired up spots in the past and don't have any dramas with stripping and soldering to the existing wire, or getting through grommets, but I just wanna make sure I don't make an expensive mistake with all this fancy ecu crap.

Much appreciated

Steve

I take it you are using a relay and seperate power feed not just hook up directly to your spotlight circuit.  If your not using a relay you are definately asking for trouble but more than likely will blow a fuse before any damage.

You need a seperately fed relay for your spotlights to run off.  But you can tap into your high beam feed as the signal to switch your relay on (this is the most common and easiest way)

Most spotlight realya kits come with a pre terminated switch, relay and instructions that are easy enought to follow for most people

Haha, yep definitely only talking about a feed/signal for the relay... I probably should have pointed that out. I can't imagine this causing a problem but with modern ecu's/canbus systems just want to be sure

Your lights will run off the body control module. Ecu's and canbus are only for engine and transmission controls. You will be right to pick up your signal from the back of the headlights

I'm doing the same job to my vx at the moment. Bloody pain in the rear end having to rip the bumper off then find the best path for the wiring.

Does connecting the relay trigger to the high beam on a CANBUS system have many problems, does it detect a fault? be it over currect etc etc ?

Ive still gotta connect my trigger into my jeep with CANBUS!
