Anybody gonna be in Coral Bay 5th-12th October?

Towing the boat n wife n kids up to Coral Bay on 5th October for 1 week. I know its still 3 months away but just thought i'd put it out there early and see if any Fishwrecked Fisho's or Divers are gonna be up there would be good to say gday n have a beer. I wanna get a few dives in so a buddy would be good also ive never taken the boat out fishing/diving there and would like a contact to radio if any problems happen out there

Cheers Dave

Coral Bay Sea Rescue Radio Coverage

Wed, 2013-06-19 14:19

I'm planning to be up there with small run about but will have a hoard of kids with me so if boating will be inside the reef only.

In regards to radio contact Coral Bay Sea Rescue if my memory serves me correct, operate set hours of radio coverage only 9am to 5pm (basically shop hours).

You will physically need to go into the shop they operate out of (next to supermarket near the bick pickers) and complete a registration form (boat details, car rego, contact number and place of residence while in CB).

If you rock up to the ramp and try and log on you will get a pretty colourful response over the airways for all to hear (IME), so if you prefer discretion and want to avoid looking like a good for nothing holiday maker pest just fill the form in the day you arrive and you will then only need to log on with S.R. after that.

I’m guessing the CB Sea Rescue team have had to deal with a few Muppets on a regular basis so they are not the most customer friendly people I’ve come across (or I just got them on a bad day)

m8 the sea rescue in coral

m8 the sea rescue in coral bay runs by working volunteers -not retirees who volunteers like most other places, in the 2 years I was there, the amount of BS calls - 30 miles offshore no fuel , badly maintained vessels etc was the main reason for call outs -so do have some empathy where they are coming from

the best is when we cancelled a charter and u see blokes going out in 4-5m lil tinnies in weather we wouldn't even take 20m plus vessels out in- guess who gets the calls

I'll be there over the school

I'll be there over the school holidays.
Ive also had the response Speedgull had, but in their defence they are volunteers, doing it in between normal shop work and it is done in Bernies (Mahi Mahi) shop from memory.
I had expected all VSR to have access to the same database of call signs for members but it seems that isn't available.
You could get the feeling that if you sent a mayday but weren't on their registration list then bad luck!
But they do a great job providing a valuable service for no reward so all kudos to them

Agree Kudos to them

Didn't want to make the CBSR guys sound bad or me unappreciative, but when I recount my story "The day I tried to log on with CBSR" I get a roar of laughter from all who care to hear it (think Basil Faulty customer service). Was a comedy of error on my behalf.

That said I wouldn't have ventured on to the water if I didn't know I had radio coverage so experiences aside, once I got myself on the list I was grateful for their coverage
