anyone want to help me understand my furuno

Hi All
just wondering if someone would like to come out for a days fishing and help me setup my furuno 587 running a pair of ss264 transducers. I have been running this setup for a few months now and cant seem to get the settings right so i run it in auto most of the time. so i am wanting some help with settings but more so explain to me what im actually seeing on the sounder. I don't seem to get arcs like most people mention. I still manage to catch the odd fish but believe i am wasting so much time on areas that arn't holding fish.

the boats a 7.5m jackman running twin 225 yammies. wouldn't expect you to chip in for anything.
im located in mandurah but would be happy to launch anywhere although most of my marks are down this way with some around rotto.

i really want to give the deep stuff a go in the near future but until i can understand my sounder better i will be wasting to much money trying it.
thanks in advance

Rod

 After going to the John

Sun, 2014-09-07 20:16

After going to the John adams class and getting a good rundown on sounders he explained that to get a good fish arc you really need to be a situation of virtually no drift where you get multiple readings of the fish below. That's the way I interpreted his explanation anyway. Now that mine is tuned fairly well the bigger fish are showing up as largish  blue streaks, slow your scroll speed down as well to get a more definitive bottom picture.

function as well Rod, theres a fare bit in there to scroll through but also a few set ups etc from a few of the deep crew...plus Ryan T has his in there some were also. Wont help alot with what your after but trying different settings helps.

The Book by john Adams sea-kem metioned helped me also.

Using the bottom discrimmination is your best starting point, although not easy to find structure all the time, knowing your on hard ground go's a long way.

And if you are fishing out of Mandurah

Mon, 2014-09-08 06:42

There is a massive amount of virtually barren ground from the time you cross FFB until you get out around 23 nmiles - once out there there is a stack of great territory holding huge dhuies, witnessed a 22kg fish weighed on certified scales but hell it is a long way to gop just to reach the edge of some good ground

To get a classic fish arch a

Mon, 2014-09-08 07:28

To get a classic fish arch a fish has to swim (or go) from one side of the transducer cone (signal) through the centre and then back out the other side (at the same depth the edges of the cone are further from the transducer and the centre closer - hence the arch).  If a fish just swims through the edge (and not the centre) it will show however not as an arch.  If the fish stays in the signal cone it will read continuously usually as a line.  Get a good sounder book - the John Adams one is a good one.

Roddo I run the same Furuno

Mon, 2014-09-08 08:04

Roddo

I run the same Furuno 587 and SS264. To be honest, in under 100 m, I just use full auto settings (fishing auto gain setting), if you are having issue in this mode then there is likely something wrong with the install and I doubt tweaking will fix it.

Deeper than 200m and its a different story and you need to optimise settings or you will have no joy.

If your trannies are set up correctly and you have chosen the "1kW" tranny in the sounder menu (don't bother with the specific transducer models, it makes no difference unless you want to use the silly bottom discrimination mode, which is a waste of time), in full auto you should get more than adequate results......

 I still can't understand

Mon, 2014-09-08 08:42

I still can't understand your reasoning here John as it's contrary to what I was shown and the advice I received from the guys at Oceanside at the sounder forum. Since my unit has been set up properly it's been a revelation in the 30-50m range of depth where I fish. A lot of useless clutter has gone and I'm getting good bottom definition with the range settings in the 8-12m setting. Sorry mate but I disagree with your comments.

Mon, 2014-09-08 08:47

Hey sea kem, I've seen that you got quite a lot from john adams and was wondering if you use the white line function?... Reading through his book he seems to really push this as a good function but I'm yet to really see anyone use it?

Cheers

Steve

Funily enough Steve when they set it up at Oceanside the guy there said not to worry about whiteline. I will play with that setting when I finally get out again (whenever that is lol) and see what difference it makes. Just need to find a big enough school of fish

I agree with JohnF

Mon, 2014-09-08 08:22

Played around with settings to get a "better" read and compare this to auto I couldnt fault it in shallow water. Never fished in Karratha deeper than 50m due to "taxmen" getting freebies because I consider fishing a sport and dont like skulldragging any fish. Up there never used anything other than auto after the introductory "playtime" with the new toy.

Down here I think I have to learn to play again so also thank you for the link above.

Hey mate, If you can detach

Mon, 2014-09-08 08:42

Hey mate,

If you can detach the sounder from the bracket, and you don't live too far away from O'connor, bring it in and I'll set up all the settings for you and give you a rundown on how to use it and what you are looking at in the demo mode.

If you have any questions feel free to give me a call on 9337 5682.

Cheers Josh

Sea-KemI am only giving you

Mon, 2014-09-08 13:51

Sea-Kem

I am only giving you my real world experience.

Out wide, I tweak the setting as much or probably more than most, it is absolutely critical to find fish, but in shallow water, why stuff about with the sounder if you get adequate results in auto.

Below is a shot at 15 knots in FULL AUTO on my boat. To me, this is more than adequate for me to work out if there is fish there or not, and leaves me more time to catch them......

Thanks to all for the info

Mon, 2014-09-08 18:08

Thanks to all for the info this is very helpfull.

JohnF  what transducer setting have you picked in the menu settings as the ss264 is not in there I was told to use 526TID-HDD.

Josh from oceanside I might bring it up during the week as I want to have a look at some reelax outriggers.

Thanks

Yeah Rod, I tried the 526TID

Mon, 2014-09-08 20:54

Yeah Rod, I tried the 526TID and it gives identical results to the 1kW option. The 526 Option apparently allows you to use the fish ID and bottom discrimination features, both gimmicks and not worth worrying about in my opinion. Just use the 1 kw option. From my experience, I would say the transducer install (ie: location, smoothness of hull, any turbulence in front of the tranny etc) are WAY more imortant than the settings when operating in shallow water at speed. If you can't get good results at 15 knots in full auto in 40m, you likely have an install issue. I had to muck about with a lot of little installation things to get my tranny to work well, settings made little difference. As said, in deep at slow speeds, it all different and it's all about settings.
