Ashfield Bream
For change from our Bread and Butter - Herring & Skippy fishing of the rock walls, me and a mate took to the river yesterday, south part of Ashfield for a shot at a Brimski.
It wasn't first time we have tried the river, but it was the first time we finally found a spot without blowies.
We have tried spots at North Freo, Blackwall Reach and the Narrows, usually taking about 30 mins before we meet our blanket rule of: 10 blowies head somewhere else.
Based on the 11:20am High tide at Freo, we guestimated high tide at around 1:30pm at Ashfield and were slightly off, arriving at what looked high tide at about 1pm.
The good news is that we were straight onto Brim bites as soon as our lines were in the water, and my mate landed 2x 30cm+ specimens within about an hour. Nothing huge, but for a bloke who hasn't really done any brim fishing for over 15 years, I was more then impressed (and also annoyed as I had no luck)
The Brim were active consistantly, and we had a blast, with good solid bites and runs, right through until about 4:30pm. The first 90 minutes of the now outgoing tide being the more active then anything after that. After about 4:30pm when it started the darken off, the bigger bites dissapeared and only the smaller "pecker brim" were persistant. We left just before 6pm
We only used strips of mullet for bait, (bought from the fish shop not the survo), and this seemed to work quite well. After seeing a total absence of blowies though, I will be giving some of the more delicate baits like river prawns or maybe worms a go.
The half a dozen 25-33cm Brim we pulled up, we all released, on the assumption, though legal, they usually come a bit bigger then that. Along with a couple of smallies (also released of course)
Great Afternoon, definately will be back for more. Certainly pondered a few curly questions over some drinks while I was there though.
Not being experienced with Black Brim or the Swan: (My Brim fishing experience being from the last few years I spent in Gladstone, QLD)
How far up the Swan do the blowies actually go?? --Was it purely a seasonal or a sheer luck factor that none were around.... I hope not :D--
Im hoping the larger Mulloway go up river that far consistantly?? -- It'd be nice to have a big line out for that one in a thousand chance, whilst trying for a Big Brim.--
WA Flathead presumably don't travel that far upriver? -- It was nice to get dusky's as a bycatch in QLD... --
What is the best common size range to keep for these?? --I don't want to keep two smaller ones, if one larger will give a feed.--
Or is there a benchmark breeding size that they are better returned at?? -- In which case it could be better the keep a small one or two and put the breeder back ?? --
Sorry, No pics this time, was too lazy to bring a camera, and besides nothing big to write home about anyway... heh

Hi Karellan
Sounds like a good outing mate.
1) I couldn;t give you an accurate reading on how far the blowies go up the river, as I suspect that like many fish, it will depend on how much fresh water is in the system.
With the recent rains I would think that the blowies wouldn't be much further up than the Causeway.
2) I have caught flathead as far up as Caversham - but not when there has been a lot of rain.
Not sure of your last 2 questions. Are you talking about bream or flathead.

swan mulloway
the only place in the swan ive had consisent action from mulloway would be mosmans bay out of a tinnie - try using mulies on the bottom with heaps of berly between the months of september and march - use two 4/0 chemicaly sharpened octops circle hooks and long light leader (18kg max) - heavy ball sinkers and dont forget when running a ball sinker down to a swivel knot thread a small bead on the line between the sinker and swivel - this stops the sinker catching on the knot and reduces the chance of spooking the mulloway when it picks up the bait as the sinker catches on the knot .

Got that sorta tackle setup
Got that sorta tackle setup already, lets say Ive done a lot of reading on here the last few months, just not much posting...
Cheers, for the Rough Dates / Location... Was curious to know just how far they head upstream. I just found a post in another thread, suggesting they go at least as far as Guildford in summer. So that answers that Question... I guess...
Tinnies on the way with the tax return :D so I won't be landbased much longer.
