back in the day

got a pm from a certain young bloke that is a member of fishwrecked asking for some advice on spearfishing made me start to think back to the days I was first diving with old paper sounders and no gps what we used to do was get towed behind the boat ( about 50meters back those old blue band merks used to spew out lots of oil which could make you feel crook) once we found ground we would we would dive it and then move on all up it probably wasn't the right thing to do as we took many times the limits we have today

Being towed behind

Tue, 2013-08-27 00:47

Being towed behind a boat in this day and age is like trawling for GWs with live bait. Not for this little black duck.

Petermac , we did the same also. paper sounders and landmarks. Often we were crook but i think that was more self inflicted than oilslicks lol. Scottno glad you had a riveting morning but please don't mock the mature guys for reminising . .

Did the same on the Kwinana

Tue, 2013-08-27 10:31

Did the same on the Kwinana side of Garden Island when I was a kid. I don't live in Perth anymore so Im not sure if its still there, but I remember a little beach with picnic tables was on the island and we used to get towed over the weed bank looking for blues and cook at said picnic spot. Not sure if the Navy allows people there any more though. Im only mid 30's so its not just a sport for the older dudes :)

We did it a bit too, used to

Tue, 2013-08-27 20:20

We did it a bit too, used to get towed out onto Mindon Reef just out from South Mole, ( I think that was what it was called) and pluck heaps of crays off it. If we had any air left, we would swim back along the mole and pick up a few more crays from there as well. Back then nobody batted an eye lid if you went in with 20 or 30 crays, just as long as they were size and not tarred or berried.

cheers

Dale
