Backup motor

I have been working for months to get the battered old Quinny out on the Bay and as my post of yesterday said last Sunday was the day but turned pooey due to a circlip falling off the fuel port. Although i was able to get a tow back to the ramp, i don't feel i will always have that luxury and don't want to put anyone out. So - i am looking at getting an auxillary - the boat is 4.4m with currently a 35hp Evinrude tiller steer. I have looked at a few sites in regard to a 12v electric long leg. I have a Powerpak jump start unit of 600 amps and would rather use this as i have no electrics on the boat. A standard small outboard doesn't appeal due to weight and bulk. Can anyone advise if this is feasible?

A battery would be better as they don't have voltage spikes. I would look into the jumper pack as it is only ment to give power to the battery in emergencies. If you hook up the jumper pack at 600amps then make sure the electric leg can handle it??

eg. your car alternator would charge your battery between 60 amps to 100 amps

Doubt an electric motor will do it?

Way too little torque for a 4.4m boat - wouldn't want any wind or current about.

Use the battery for a marine band radio and call sea rescue for help - it should only be occasional that you have a problem.

There was a forum - or still is - on this site about the spare motor saga - end result was that it is really not worth having.....

Spend the money on the motor you have and let a mate go with you on the next run as backup until you know you can trust the engine...

The battery boost pack can only deliver the 600 amps for a few seconds - eg. a 60 amp hour battery can deliver 60 amps for 1 hour or 1 anp for 60 hours - get the idea - the battery pack wouldn't run the electric motor for more than about 10 minutes - tried it on the youngsters inflatable -which only did about 6 knots with no weight on a 30lb electric motor....

Good Luck...
