Check the legality...
...it might sound silly, but fisheries could have an issue with "processed" abalone on board.

Abalone
hi fish hunter, check in the abalone fishing guide on the net, it has a section marked bait and it does say no part of an ab can be used as bait, an innocent mistake by you but be aware for the future. As for lastcasts comment, no wonder this forum is lacking active members ! Just an explanation of the rule would be better than that comment !

yes i did not know that till now so thanks lastcast for your abrupt advice.. this is the rule " The use of abalone meat or any abalone material as fishing bait is prohibited and significant fines apply. This is a biosecurity measure to reduce the risk of introducing abalone disease and pathogens such as abalone viral ganglioneuritis in wa waters"

Some old Italian guys I know
Some old Italian guys I know used to fill hessian bags with abalone and then fill their cray pots up with them. Used to be the best bait apparently.

Yep, very good bait, that's all we used to use as a kid over at Garden Island.

I'm not advocating anything.
I'm not advocating anything. Seal and whale meat was great bait for great whites too. Also not the legal thing to do these days.

Has been illegal for a very long time.
As long as I can remember, in fact, and my memory on the fishery goes back a loooong way.
On another note, does it say anything about using those kelp snails that come up in pots? Been told they are pretty good craybait , too, cracked--haven't tried it myself of course.

The old Italian bloke that told me about it used to get them by the sackfull from first point at greenough then row out to his pots. Probably would of been the 50's or 60's I reckon.

I was spewing when that rule came in. I used to use ab guts as berley in the bay. Best burley around.
