Bait and Suncream
Submitted by MarkTheShark on Thu, 2015-01-08 13:01
Hi guys,
was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on using suncream then baiting up your hooks. Do you think it will effect your catch rate as the fish might not like the smell? And does anybody have any tricks to avoid getting it on your baits as its not so easy just to wipe it off your hands. Im guessing the same effect deisel and petrol would have too.... Maybe the newest bloke on the boat can apply the suncream to the other fishos haha

Tuna oil
Tuna oil is an excellent alternative to sunscreen. Has been proven to block UV and will only improve the appeal of your bait Id say.....
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

latex
it may be a bit anal but I use the old cheapie latex gloves for wacking on sun screen. Of course I put it on while on shore as sun screen on the boat is right up there with bananas for bad luck lol.

Urban Myth
Quite some years ago, I never ever used sunscreen on the basis that it must put fish off.
Then one day I was fishing an AAA State Beach and Rock Championship, and came across the best fisherman I've ever known....multiple State Champion, and mens champion for the Offshore Angling Club (Beach) for countless years.
He was plastering subscreen on himself, and I proffered that he wouldn't catch anything with that on. His response was that he'd been doing it for years, and did I think it had affected his performance. There is no response really.
From that day on, I have plastered it on me as well, and I can honestly say it has made no difference. Obviously I do wipe my hands on a rag afterwards, but I'm not anal about it.
Do yourself a favour....put it on and look after your skin. I don't reckon you'll notice a difference to your catch rate.

I remember fishing at Floreat
I remember fishing at Floreat years ago with some friends and they were catching nothing while everyone around them was cleaning up. Turned out the wife/mother of the friends was handing them mulies after having put sunscreen on. They started getting the mulies themselves and were catching them the same as everyone else after that.
Ever since then I've always put my sunscreen on (when I remember to put it on) using a rag

I cover up
and use spray sunscreen when I remember to take it. Long sleeves, big hat, collar up etc. Otherwise I lather on the backup glovebox sunscreen much like the aforementioned member of our club.
This club member of ours, doesn't happen to cook up a seriously tasty smelling bacon and egg roll in his red crate kitchen does he? Probably has something to do with the amount of fish he catches. Cruel standing on a beach eating a dry premade ham sandwhich then copping a nostril full of that awesomeness.

Dont think its an issue, a melanoma IS.
Changing the subject insect repellant is an issue and wouldnt recommend Bushman's near Bait as the catch rate drops off heaps.

Wouldnt thinks so
But then I have no experience with them. The Bushmans (DEET) i have proved (sort off non scientifically).
Was fishing off dampier and over a few times noted that whenever the Mrs used Bushman's her catch rate dropped. I never use Bushmans apart from near Sandflies and mine didnt. So to put this into Practice went to a spot that we use to call Snapper City. Thousands of mostly little NW snapper here, so absolutely gauranteed a bite or 100 and a fish a drop (albeit small ones). Started with both no Bushmans, fish a drop. Applied Bushmans and then baited with hands used to apply the repellant - NADA for both off us for ages.
Had some chemical handwash clothes used in Medicine to get rid off all the DEET. First the Mrs and instantly she was on to fish again. I went fishless. I used the cloth and back to the start with a fish a drop. Felt pretty conclusive to me So if you are going to use insect repellant (the best IMO is Bushman's) DONT touch bait on my boat (or jigs, placcies etc) or use the Alcohol based handwipes to get rid (pun) off it.

I never
I never used to apply sunscreen and didn't catch much fish; now I do apply sunscreen and still don't catch much so it OBVIOUSLY makes no difference.

On a Kalbarri trip a few
On a Kalbarri trip a few years ago we (especially me) were cleaning up on Dhuie's, Snapper and Baldies for two days straight. I got burnt the second day so was the only one to put sunscreen on before fishing on the third day, the boat cleaned up again but I didn't catch one fish.....

I put on the sunscreen
I put on the sunscreen thickly at home before going out then wash my hands thoroughly, never reapply in the boat. Full days fishing and never been burnt but wear long sleeve shirt, long shorts and a good hat and sunnies (and lately a head sock as well at times).
Mostly dry heat here in SA so you don't tend to sweat the sunscreen off - might be different further north

No difference
Found that there is no difference between having sunscreen on your hands or not. The fish still bite just the same.
Diesel or two stroke oil are a different thing, petrol isn't so bad because it evaporates quickly
