Baitcasting reel thoughts....??

Gday guys,

This is my first post so I hope I dont contravene any etiquette on these forums or whathaveya...

Im looking at adding to my arsenal of gear, in the way of a 12' beach solution, plus a fast/medium rod for baitcasting with, probably around the 7 and a half to 8 foot mark....

I want to share the reel between the 12 and the 7-8ish and currently, two reels which have caught my fancy are the Abu 7000 - Abu 7500 Series, aswell as the C3 options... and the Daiwa Millionaire Proteus 300.

Im looking at using 20 or 25 pound braid and would like a reel which uses ratchets. Can anyone offer any advice or recommendations as to what sort of Rod to get for the 12 and the 7-8ish? Graphite? Glass? Live Fibre?

Also, has anyone got any reviews on the above reels or perhaps a better suggestion ranging from $150-$300 which fits the bill to use on both rods? Any advice would be great :)

Welcome to fishwrecked mate. I love my Abu 6500, so would assume the 7000 - 7500 would be similar in performance. I have been suprised at what I've been able to catch on it and would definately recommend buying one.

As for the rods, I'm with Andy, I'm sure some of the other fellas on the site can point you in the right direction. :)

Cheers,
Adam

ABU 7000 - get one!

Mon, 2007-06-11 21:28

As far as decent sized casting reels go it is pretty hard to go look past the ABU 7000 range. I have a few and the standard 7000 is almost imposible to destroy and fantastic value for money. I recently increased the collection with a 7000 ci it has an oversized handle, very comfortable, full alloy body and spool. Great looking reel/easy maintenance and i can not fault them. The 7000 is a great all round baitcasting reel, good for all occasions including popper chucking, beach surf casting, bottom bashing / light game.

Hope this helps

The abu's arent too bad,

The abu's arent too bad, they cast ok, better once line guide is removed. Valuewise i think they are pretty hard to beat. The ducks nuts how ever would be something like a Millionaire Luna 300 or Saltiga Surf 30.

Definately if you go the Abu tho dont get the standard 7000, go something like the c3 or pro-rocket series, if you want to use lures the stainless steel model is high speed.

Im a Newbie

Yeah, looking at campbells, they reckon the abu C3 7500 would be good for jigging too...

Hmm dont know how robust these reels are but it would be an awesome choice for an all round overhead baitcasting/bottom bouncing and jigging reel.... any thoughts?

Also, yeah, Im a bit new when it comes to jigging and any serious deep sea fishing so was also just curious.... graphite or fibreglass in relation to boatfishing and excuse the newbieness, but is there a big difference between a jigging rod and a standard boatrod which is used for trolling and bottom bouncing? Or can you use most boatrods for all these types of fishing?

Also, Im 6'3 and 95kgs... what sized boatrod is better for a taller fella? is longer or shorter better?

Sorry for the real newb questions....

giday Rickets, The jigsick

giday Rickets,

The jigsick today have different action the that of glass stroker rods, they're vory strong yet light weight so you can jig (fish) all day.
glass rods are more forgiving when it comes to mistreatment and are usually much cheaper than the starting range of jig sticks, also matching up a reel to the size if the rod is important as a dirty big over head is going to look and feel more at home on a stroker rod than on a graphite jig stick in most cases

ABU 7000

Wed, 2007-06-13 13:09

rickets - I bought my ABU 7000 in 1993...
It's been absolutely and comprehensively thrashed in that time ranging from freshwater fishing in India for Giant Mahseer, big Barra and Black Jewfish in The Gulf of Carpentaria, Spanish Macks and mid size Yellowfin in New Britain, big Jacks in the Noosa River, Kingfish in NZ and all sorts of street brawlers at the outer coral sea reefs....Some may say I've been trying to destroy it through natural attrition. Anyway, I rebuilt it a couple of months ago(for the first time)...thinking I would need a lot of new parts....I replaced the drag washers...that's it. My ABU 7000 looks like it has been dragged behind a car....but it is still runs smooth, casts better than most, has a silky smooth drag and is still catching. It's spooled with 40lb braid....long may she live.

ABU's

Wed, 2007-06-13 13:17

Go the Abu's, I've got 4 ABU's, 2 7000's and there a great reel. Use it to cast big baits off the beach at night with 4oz sinker and no drama's - very easy to control over spool.

One of the C3 6500 I've got has givin a couple of drama's with the free spool button not popping up, but probabaly just needs a good service!

Cheers Jason

One of my 6500s has completely lost its drag. No fun at all when monstered!~

Any advice on upgrading the washers, please...
