Surf Rod Advice for Saltist 6000H/Saltiga Surf

Hello,

Originally I was being very idealistic thinking one outfit for all occasions (Salmon to Large Sharks). I'd mostly be targeting Salmon, Mulloway and Small Sharks though. I basically need some advice as when it comes to Land based fishing, I'm a fairly big novice (especially surf tackle).

As for the Reel at the moment it's the Saltist, Saltiga Surf (See Below) or Emblem Pro. (Saltiga may be overkill for what I need?)

$400~ Saltiga Surf 4500 : Weight - 515g
Ratio 4.1:1, Capacity 30lb Braid 350m

Saltiga Surf 6000 : Weight - 530g
Ratio 3.6:1, Capacity 50lb Braid 400m

 $180~  Emblem Pro 6000: Weight - 623.68g

Ratio 4.9:1, Capacity lbs/yds

5500 (Spare) Size 20/290 - 25/230 - 30/190

6000  Size 25/280 - 30/230 - 40/170

$210~  Saltist 6000H: Weight - 708g

Ratio 6.2:1

Mono: 250 yds./25 lb., 210 yds./30 lb.
Braid: 440 yds./70 lb., 330 yds./80 lb.

As for the Rod perhaps:

Daiwa Sensor Surf

Model SS1302HRS - 13ft Long
2 Piece , Heavy Action
Cast Weight - 3 to 6oz , Line 20 to 40lb

This is just what I have come to from looking around, not from any actual user advice so any input would be much appreciated!

Regards

Good gear

Fri, 2011-09-02 17:54

All good gear mate, I have the emblem pro, saltist and the sensor surf 13ft

First of all the rod you are looking at is first class, there isn't a better rod on the Market for this purpose. Light, strong and great caster
Saltiga surf is a great reel but a bit overpriced in my opinion features a long cast spool and saltiga reputation. The saltist is heavy and more suited for high speed spinning with the high ratio. Emblem pro is designed for distance casting and has a good reputation as a surf casting reel + comes with a spare spool.

My go to beach combo is the sensor surf with emblem pro spooled 30lb lo stretch mono, you won't be disappointed
I do heaps of beach fishing, send me a pm if you have any more questions

Agree with Rig ^^

Also look at the saltist 4500, smaller reel, but well matched still, i use this with a sensor surf 10' for what your describing as most of my fishing is for small sharks and mullo's but predominately salmon, snapper and tailor on lures, mines an awesome combo running 20lb mono for what i need :)

Good Luck :)

Appreciate the responses!, thinking maybe a 6500H Saltist with 13FT Sensor Surf. Would the Emblem be at all a better suit, or a smaller Saltist?

The 6500 saltist is a pretty big reel, the 4500 will hold 300 yards of 50lb braid, unless you want to fish mono I don't really see the point of going a massive reel. It just makes lure work heaps harder.

I have owned and used all

I have owned and used all those reels at one stage for exactly what you want....If you never using lures its an easy decision the saltiga surf is a awesome reel for soaking baits and massive winching power(due to low gear ratio, crap for lures though) probably the only reel i would replace instantly if it got lost...Otherwise go the emblem pro if you want to work lures..

The Poseidon Extender is made in South Africa.  Many of you may know that Rock and Surf fishing is a national sport for the mob over there and is a really big thing.  This rod was developed by them.  It has an extendable butt section.  Basically, you make you rod handle a little more than a foot longer for casting and then simply retract it.  It makes for a very comfortable rod with a casting range that will make any surf caster proud.  Take a look at  http://www.fishinggateway.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_37&products_id=181 .  PM me and I will see what plan I can make to make it a little more attractive if the 25% sale is over.

While you there, look at the Tuff Tackle reels.  Made in Australia and 15 year warranty.  They have landed marlin and other big pelagics with them.

Dumb question ?? - Daiwa Emplem Pro

Wed, 2011-09-21 15:04

Hi. A few of you guys have highly recommended the Daiwa Emplem Pro.

I have had a little web surf, and noticed there are 2 different models (probably more, but my question only relates to 2).

There is the standard Australian Model (Emblem Pro 5500) and the US model (Emblem Pro 6000). In mfausers initial post, he mentioned the 6000 (US model from what I can tell). The 6000 model seems to be a fair bit cheaper and has very different specs (lower gear ratio, less ball bearings etc).

So, my quesiton is to the guys that have been giving the Emplem Pro a good rap. Are you talking about the US model or the Aussie model? I assume the Aussie 5500 model?  Or am I completely wrong about the whole US / Australian thing.

Sorry to hijack this post...... but I am also in the market for a decent surf reel under $200 for a 12ft graphite Daiwa Heartland surf rod(2-4oz cast model).

Cheers

aussie

Wed, 2011-09-21 17:23

I can only speak for the aussie and its a good reel, stood the test of time I suppose, cant comment on the american version as I havent seen it.  The aussie does come with 2 spools if thats what you want, not sure about the american

Its important to note when comparing these 3 reels as I now own all 3:

for low down grunt and smooth as silk winding the saltiga surf is just that, stingrays and big fish are what it is built for.

The emblem pro has less torque with a higher retrieve ratio but will easily account for tailor salmon  etc, I have caught big fish on mine including rays.

The saltist is also tough but has a high ration.  I have caught plenty of mackies with mine.  Its not really a surf bait and sinker reel more a high speed lure retrieve reel and it doesnt have a long cast spool.

to sumerise Pembo the emblem will be fine for your heartland and I would stick with an aussie, imo the saltiga is made to be matched with a brute stick

Google

Mon, 2012-04-02 15:26

There are a few reviews on google I would suggest reading if you haven't already, one pulled the reel to bits for a look.
I would also post on this forum for any feedback someone might have one you can take a look at. If your a member of western angler forum I would recommend also asking the question there as Hal Harvey is on there frequently and being in his position try's lots of different fishing gear.
It isn't on shimano Australia's website as a listed reel as far as I could see.
One thing I would take notice of is 20kg of drag on what looks to be mostly a plastic reel could be an issue. For $250 you should be getting a mid priced reel of decent quality but by no means top of the range

 I have the ultegra 14000

Fri, 2012-04-06 09:56

I have the ultegra 14000 (comes with a spare 10000 spool) i bought it online to go with my 13ft sensor. I havent caught anything decent on this reel but it seems well built, it has some great features and a baitrunner system built into drag. The only problem it is a large fairly heavy reel, would definately be for soaking baits only IMO. I found it to heavy for the sensor surf (which is a great rod by the way). The ultegra would be an awsome reel would just need to find a rod to match it with. I ended up buying the Daiwa wincast z5500 which i really like.
