Ballooning

Hi all,

Went fishing over the weekend off a little rock shelf I found a bit North of Leeman. Didn't have much time so I only pulled out the light gear, snagged a little Skippy and a couple of herring around 30 - 35cms. (I think that's a good size for herring isn't it?) I also caught some colourful little numbers that I didn't recognise, it had spots up top and stripes/blotches on it's body, colouring was black, yellow and silver, serious gill rakers and some nasty little spines up top and underneath. Anyone know what these were?

I released everything I caught anyway but the second part of this query is ballooning. This ledge I was on looked prime to drift out a balloon with a small herring or skippy on live, has anyone done this up that way? What would the possibility of a lurking spaniard be like?

Still relatively new to WA so any advice is appreciated!

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Spot on hoookt, Yellowtail trumpeter, just looked at some photos of them and it was definitely them.

Grayzeee, I'll give it a crack next time I'm there! There were some bust ups on the service but I assumed more than likely tailor...

Those trumpeter make top live baits. They will out last a herring by a country mile. With their tough skin you only need to put the hook in just down from the start of its dorsal fin.

Ballooning up there could produce anything from mulloway, tailor ,spaniards or sharks with some bottom feeders a chance as well.

I'm itchin to get back up there and have a crack! With a bit of berley I could bag out on skippy and herring on the light gear while I wait for the balloon to go off!!
