hey fellas, i own a snyder glass low winch mount two piece regal 7159 12/9 rod for ballooning beach rod, works great in the surf, but when hooked up on a serious fish( macky, tuna) its like a lacky band and is hard work, was thinking of cutting it down and rebuild? or is it not worth it? should i just sell it and invest in something more suitable? any opinions would b really helpfull, im pretty close to making it a project..... cheers....

G day mate.
you can cut them down. It will only make it stiffer though and will still be like a lacky band when you load it up. You won't get any more power out of the rod. Over east we were using 7 ft rods for livebaiting. But they are straight up and down rock faces that needed minimal clearance. Aloth of blokes I have talked to over here(WA) use 8 and 9 ft rods. Kilwell Live fibre make 1. As do Pacific Composite in that range.

what i would like to know is
what i would like to know is what makes a good ballooning rod.
the only landbased big gear i own are the Saber grafast 670 and 670H both seven foot long that I made up 20 years ago, matched to TLD30 SPD and Tiagra 50 2SPD
would these be suitable for balloon rods?

Don't know my 2c worth
I have a 10" Catana rated at 6 oz, with a diawa 910 (1000m of 65 lb line) and upgraded drag.
does the trick.
so I would say 8 - 10 foot (any longer and leverage becomes a problem), although 7" would probably do the trick.
light tip (to absord the shock of the baloon/bait bouncing around)
with a stroung backbone.
reel:
Anything that can hold 800m of line (50+lbs)
really good drag system
reel seat, (high mount, to assist with the harness)
