Ban Time - What's your plan?

First season with a boat and I appreciate the impact of the ban now, but rather than be depressed it's time to plan for different targets!

For me i've decided to get the family out on in the sound for some relaxing KG Whiting and Squid.
Weather permitting putting some pots out deeper for crays
Explore some inshore reefs with the snorkel and mask to see if any crays are in

So what's your plan Gents?

Ban?

Wed, 2013-10-16 11:32

What ban? no such thing up here, only big winds that blow from mid August through till mid March.

But see what happens when we get a window when it drops out.

How shallow can you get crays

Wed, 2013-10-16 13:31

How shallow can you get crays guys? Ive never done it before but is it worth free diving say the back of Garden Island for them? I cant imagine myself diving any deeper than 5m, is that too shallow?

Wed, 2013-10-16 13:42

I always heard the crackling underwater but wasnt sure if it was coming from somewhere close and if they were close if they were only small ones or not. Guess I'll give it a go this summer.

Is there a certain time of the season where youd get more in shallowI than other times?

Wed, 2013-10-16 14:15

usually crays malt around the previous seasons open time of 15th November (give or take a week) which means the crays are right under the reef after the malt until their shells harden, or right under the reef during the malt. This happens in the shallows, so best time to get crays in shallow is before these dates now that the season has opened up earlier than normal.

I'd be giving it a go now, up until the 15th or so of nov. Keeping in mind quite a lot have egg's or tar spot at present so you will probably be letting a few go as well.

Seen heaps last summer, we actually caught heaps of rats trolling for tuna ob ffb. Biggest one I landed was 70cms on stickbait,we usually see tthem while casting for tailor around the reefs. Biggest ive seen is about 15-20kg hanging around a baitball that tailor and bonito were busting up.
I think rotto is pretty good for them and pretty sure they react well to burley and lightly weighted mulie cubes

I'll definitely be targeting YTK around Rotto, west end. They are pretty good eating. I'll use my Penn 9500 with 50lb braid, same as what I use for Sambo's.....should be okay, not? If they are anything like the YTK we used to catch around Cape Point (South Africa) they are early morning feeders and very fussy at that??
