Band splitter

Does any one on here use a band splitter. I am upgrading the electrics in my boat and am getting a new GME GX700w, I also was lucky enough to win a GME 9600 CD player/am/fm radio. My question is, will a band splitter work? I don't want any interference as safety is paramount to me as I take my little fella out with me now, or am I better off getting 2 aerials. Also I like the idea of the quick connect aerials that GME have - are they good to go or is there a better option I should be looking at.
Cheers

I had one on my boat and
I had one on my boat and could never reliably get the ABC or FM at the Abrolhos.
Was annoying as I enjoy just chilling with a coldy listening to the ABC after the kids crash out, in the dark.
Made some enquiries with a bloke who makes aerials and he said straight out that a VHF/UHF aerial cannot provide a good reception as the aerial has the wrong resistance.
Bought a cheap 12" flex car aerial and fitted it and am/fm booms in everywhere I have been so far
Maybe the splitter I had was dodgy but I reckon it is about 3x better now,
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Band splitter
hey rj I put an am/fm radio in my boat not long ago and the radio came with an aerial that was basically a piece of wire about 6foot long, I was going to use a band splitter caus I didn't think the piece of wire would get good reception and I didn't want 2 aerials hanging off my boat. Much to my surprise I get perfect reception on the piece of wire aerial and we regularly fish 25nm out.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

Splitters/diplexers will
Splitters/diplexers will work...... but at a cost. They are simple band pass filters and you will get insertion losses, anywhere up to 3db. This equates to the loss of about half of your recieve or transmit signal. Roughly around 25 to 30% less range.
For best performance go with seperate antenas.
As for quick connect antenas..... just another water ingress/failure point to go wrong. If you can live with fold back mounts they will serve you better.

Dinghy World
Dinghy World sell a flexible antenna to go into the am/fm radio for 10 bucks.
I just plugged it into the radio and layed it willy nilly under the dash and it works perfect.
Problem solved.
