Baron sportsman fuel tank

I am wondering if any of the baron sportsman owners on here have replaced their portable fuel tanks with one tank ? If so I am looking for any info/ideas on size , positioning, mounting of the fuel filler & what you used the rest of the space for .

I am also wondering if anyone can post a pic of where they have successfuly mounted their transducer (transom mount) as I am having trouble holding bottom at speed . Any help greatly appreciated ...

Yes I have.

I have fitted an 80 litre cruise tank. Fits nicely, at a pinch you could fit a 40 Plus a 50. More pipe work involved, but you always know you have 40 lt fuel left if you run the other tank dry.

I also have the origional 90lt aluminuim tank stored away, has some pit holes in it, if you have a friend with a TIG welder it could be repaired.

Can get pictures of the installation if required.

I would like to see both

As i am still after ideas I would like to see both setups . Iana yours will probably be closer to mine as your floor has not been modified . I am keen to see where you have both  mounted your fuel fillers and the routing of your fuel lines . Iana , where did you get your "cruise tank from " ?

Till is right (this time!)

Sat, 2010-01-30 09:15

Till is right. Both companies sell them, better treatment from Whitworths though. The stock standard 80 litre fits in as is, I used two sets of the cruise tank hold down plates (two at each end of the tank, the kit also comes with inert nylon spacing strips to raise the tank off the surface and allow drainage, very satisfied with the result.

The pipework I used 1/2 copper pipe and I joined each pipe to fitting with 1/2 hose, no flaringing. All pipe and metal fittings have been electricly bonded to a common earth on the boat.

The only hiccup with using these tanks is that the filler cap is on the tank. The tanks come with fittings, large access panel for cleaning etc, fuel sender flange.

I will take some pictures when I go down to the boat which is in storage.

Don't forget the fuel vent (clean it out) and the "swan neck" in the breather line, stops water entering the fuel tank.

They have a part CTA0355

Sat, 2010-01-30 09:41

They have a part CTA0355 Stainless Steel Filler Neck which is presumably an adapter for an external filler. I have seen them fitted, but haven't had the need to track one down as yet.

Edit: from this link http://www.whitworths.com.au/pdf/catalogues/current/p068_2009Summer.pdf

REMOTE BELOW DECK LOCATIONS
For these installations a 5/8" thread
breather take off (takes 1/2” hose)
and a 1 1/2" hose filler take off for
use with a deck filler are available

Lack of clearance

Sat, 2010-01-30 10:44

If you are staying with the stock standard Baron, there will be little clearance between the top of the tank and the removable floor panel.

With the origional tank, the take-off is on the side. With the cruise tanks it comes off the top.

iana i had a baron and the

iana

i had a baron and the tank was a 90litre ally in floor tank with the filler and breather up on the side near the windscreen. it was in the center of the floor just behind the seats and the filler tube went up near the steering wheel and out to the top edge were you walk.

this seem to be a factory fit out.

the only problem we found was at the filler point, it  needed to be a littel bit higher to stop water getting in, we solved this by unbolting it an putting a 1/2" spacer underneath. we also fitted a water catch type fuel filter.

all aside i would be going with the in floor tank even if you have to have it repaired or replaced as we found the baron went better in the rough stuff with a bit more weight forward.

it also gives you the option of taking a couple of jerrys if you req more fuel.

if your baron has this space in the floor you could get a custom made tank to suit.

there must be a few differant barons out there because ours looks to be the same as the one in you pic, it was a cuddy cab with a factory fitted outboard(no pod).

my uncle had a baron as well, same size(18-6) with a inboard and no cuddy cab, i think his was a sportsfish maybe?, ours was a sporstman.

great boat either way and i would still have it  today if it wasnt for the creature comforts of our new one.

good luck

Had me worried?

Sat, 2010-01-30 14:56

The motor of my Baron is on a aluminium frame, mounted like a pod. Its an Outrider 1900. In excellent condition.

I still have the origional tank, needs to be repaired. We are talking Stainless steel verses aluminium. Thats why I put in the cruise tank.

Different barons

Sat, 2010-01-30 15:36

I think that there are few different vairiations of the sportsman . Mine looks exactly like Ianas pic but has a factory fitted outboard (no pod) . It is one of the late model (04) remakes I believe . At first I liked the idea of an external fuel filler but now im not sure . I had originally planed to mount the filler in the motor well and plumb the fuel hose through the wet box into fuel tank cavity , however I would also rather position the tank to the front and use the leftover space for other purposes . So at the moment im leaning toward something like ianas tank .

our baron was the older

Sat, 2010-01-30 15:43

our baron was the older type.

if you mount the filler in the well, make sure you place it  as high as possible.

i didnt even know they remade them! just goes to show they were good boats.

we sold ours and the new owner upgraded the engine and was even better.

cheers

The newer ones

Thanks

Iana thanks for the pic , you have given me some great ideas . I have just flown back into perth so I am off to source some stainless and the rest of the fittings I will need . At this stage I am planning to make a tank about 140 L and position it to the front of the cavity . I am going to make it externally fillable and am hoping to have just under a meter of space left for other purposes . I dont expect it will be finished very soon as I am very busy with engine rebuilds at work , but i will be sure to post pics when it is done .
