Basic Boating fishing question

 Hi all,

Im a noob to boat fishing, and want to take my first boat out to Cockburn sound to try for a snapper(or maybe a salmon) on the weekend.

I have only every land based fished before, prefering to use gang hooks, with a pilchard/mullie, and a running sinker set up, for salmon/taylor.

My question is, whats the basics when it come to boat fishing. I have a sounder, so do I just go south west of woodman point & find some land mass(ie. reef/rocks) under the boat & drop a hook, and maybe throw some burley in?

Im guessing a running sinker rig isnt the best, and a paternoster is better on a boat.

I know fishing is all about trial & error & lots of luck, but Im just looking for the basics, can anyone recommend a guide online somewhere ??

Also, If anyone knows any good spots for a noob I would really appreciate if you could let me know !!

Thanks All !

Nothing wrong with the running sinker rig, just downsize the sinker as small as possible. Try to get your bait to float down at the same rate as your burley instead of plummeting down with huge lead.

Basics

I can't help on fishing the sound but the basics usually apply everywhere.

Fish like structure as that is where the small fish hide that they feed on.

Fishing for snapper is a bit different to fishing for salmon.

You could run a patternoster rig for the bottom fish and a floater with a 2 hook snelled rig for the upper surface fish.

Just choose the right conditions to get used to what you are doing out there.

Make your rigs at home if possible and set up a rod or 2 at least ready to go so you aren't trying to tie rigs while on the water and wasting fishing time.

The sound ( Cockburn )

Has a lot of areas for noobs just need to explore ..... Throw out the pick and drop the burley bucket over broken ground....... Tie in a patternoster rig to your favourite rod bait the bottom hook  with squid and the top hook with halve a Mullie ...... Have another rod hanging with a squid jig as there plenty to catch ....l if you hang around the coat hanger you will get lots of skippy in the 40cm size  ......

If you need some on deck coaching give me a call ...... I live close .....

Give the shipping chanel a look mate. It runs north south between garden and woodies pt. Ive found big bait schools along the drop off which in turn attracts the predators. Taylor salmon snapper. I just cruise around stop on the bait schools drop a small jig or soft plastic and see..

Give Ohh Yeh a pm that’s a great offer , most probably learn more in one outing than half a dozen on your own ..

Never turn down the opportunity to learn first hand. Even something as simple as being taught how to setup a drift so you drift over lumps and aren't spinning around in circles drifting over weed patches etc or how to precisely drop anchor will be a huge benefit.

Not a lot of reef or broken ground in the sound. What there is is not overly high or over a large area. Most people will sound right over top of it without even knowing it.

Hey mate, I haven't had much

Mon, 2017-04-10 20:58

Hey mate, I haven't had much luck in the sound. Try heading just around the northern tip of garden island about a kilometre or so.

Anchor up and burley up the water as soon as you get there, dawn and dusk are best times.

I use an unweighted gillies lumo gang set, you can buy these from anglers fishing world in Fremantle. The big stores like BCF etc don't sell them.

Rig up a mulie or whole squid and cast it out, reeling in a bit of line every now and then.

If you want also rig up a paternoster and drop it at the boat, try and have a few rods in at a time with different set ups until you find something that works for you.

All the best hope to see some pics soon.

Thanks for the replies all !

Thanks for the replies all ! & Ooh Yea, I might take you up on that offer!

Im having second thoughts about this weekend though, swell & wind might be a bit high. Im a complete noob, and Im not completely confident on the boats reliability yet, and its only a small 5 meter boat.

Im thinking of giving crabbing in Mandurah in collins pool a go instead, and go for the snapper/salmon next weekend instead.

Undecided for now !

Did my first attempt last

Mon, 2017-05-01 16:25

Did my first attempt last Saturday.

Didn't get a line in the water till 1pm.

Tried drifting with burley in the middle, paternoster with prawn on snapper hook, and long line pillie(mulie), on gangs.

Then went to 10M depth off garden island, doing the same. Then trolled a bit with lures around a flock of seagulls.

Then tried squidding the grasses in the shallows off the island.

Then baited again.

Got nothing !!

Spoke to others who were there from 7am, and they got nothing too - thats fishing !

Was a beautiful day for it though !

Points for trying anyway mate

Mon, 2017-05-01 21:36

Points for trying anyway mate but that's Fishing aye.

Try and sit on some good ground either pre dawn or pre dusk, let the burley do its thing, you'll get there eventually!
