Basic Rod Building Course EOI

Something we are looking at doing in the near distant future is a Basic rod building course.

Atm we are throwing the idea of around 4 or 5 people at a time and doing the same rod to keep it simple, either a bream rod or a surf either a 2 piece 10 footer or 12 footer

Basically we will source a good blank and parts and show how to build it etc, so basically you will be glueing up, and binding your own rod.

Costs will be worked once once implemented and the components are sourced.

Again this is a BASIC course so not butt wraps etc just guide bindings with trim work etc

I am thinking if we do bream rods a way to set them off will be using camo grips, just for reference.

Will run it over a few different days/weeks etc one day glueing up reel seats and grips one day binding and one day epoxy(just a thought atm)

So if anyone is interested pop your name down, obviously this will be limited to a small number so first in best dressed.

Obviously will be at the shop , so you will need to get there at the times and days we all work out

will be sorted out once we decide on the components, we are thinking of offering a range of guides to cater for each person  and a small charge on top,for glues threads etc but isnt going to be a huge amount, will be more of a service

I just want to start with something small and easy that will last me years to come.

For the past couple of months i have been seriously looking at rod building and decided i want to take it up and start making custom rods for myself and friends , just for that extra personal touch and meaning to a rod.

A nice 2-4 kg stick would be a good start for me,

Can anyone recommend any good rod building books or references?

Bummer - I was thinking of a 16 foot, 4 piece surf rod

Tue, 2009-06-02 20:21

as my second option, but I guess there won't be too many others interested in building something like that (Lol).

Great idea!

Wed, 2009-06-03 08:36

I was thinking that surf rods/bottom bouncers/trollers would be better to do as learning tools because the lighter cotton and finer action of bream rods may be too fiddly for people just starting out, but yeah, good thinking Matt and should certainly be of some benefit to quite a few!

Courses

Wed, 2009-06-03 20:53

Courses require some certificate of completion/competance and a qualified trainer. What I consider is on offer here is a workshop learning program similar to what Bunnings offer and I think that's a fantastic idea. Bunnings do it for nothing and rely on the fact that your hunger for materials to build that fantastic project will take you back to the educator to purchase. Just like free TV also.

Wed, 2009-06-03 21:50

Since when have courses required a certificate OR a certified instructor. Accredited ones might, but mako isnt handing out cert 4s in rod building or tuckshop roster. Please be a bit more serious vince.

Serious?

Thu, 2009-06-04 20:49

I am serious.

No disrespect to anyone and an opinion only of course. The suggestion of a fee for attendance is what my point is and the statement that it is a "course". Workshops run buy businesses to promote sales and educate potential customers are great marketing tools. I see a lot of marketing going on here in various forms. I also see a variety of opinions here and some fairly unthinking responses.

I am a certified trainer and accesser (cirt4) and am only to happy to turn it into a course and give you cirtificate for it but then of cause you would have to pay big dollars ..............

Get real he is only offering to help people but if you like i could charge $ 100.00 PER COURSE PRINT YOU OUT A CIRTIFICATE AND BINGO you passed.  but matts was only covering costs i know which way i would go . ..... Sandy

Fee

Thu, 2009-06-04 21:31

Vince I think you will find that you have jumped to a conclusion around a "fee for attendance". No where does Matt say that there will be a fee for attending. What he does mention is that "costs" will be worked out when the rod type etc is decided.

I can tell you from being involved in the original discussion around this idea that the costs were to be made up from buying the parts and materials only and nothing for time or running the course/workshop.

Doug and Matt have been considering offering this as a service to the members of the site as a matter of Goodwill for the support shown to them and not as a money making exercise. You may consider this as marketing and in a way it could probably seen that way but I would rather see it for what it is - an offer for some to learn something new.

I know that I would have loved an oportunity like this 20+yrs ago when I started building rods instead of having to teach myself from books.

Thu, 2009-06-04 20:57

well to clarify the fee is to cover the costs, we will be making no money if it goes ahead and im actually looking at doing it on my days off, its about trying to introde people into it.

It seems that no matter what people do these days theres always people out there to pounce on it.

Course you say something about , then now you refer to it as a workshop, and still something?

Sorry but i only wanted to offer my time and some knowledge to some people who wanted it, ryan offered fish finder workshops not long ago, and not one word mentioned , was all taken as a great idea.

Personally i feel that if its not for you, then thats fair, but to the people who have always wanted to try it but never had the resources or knowledge to build a rod then its a great thing, from what i know no one in perth has ever done this before, but with myself and Doug we are just looking at trying new things and pushing the shop forward and actually taking time to offer people what they really want................how many other tacklestores do you know that actually appreciate your feedback and take note of it?

Point taken Mako

Thu, 2009-06-04 21:54

I understand now what is happening. What I have seen though is the shop jumping all over me for expressing an opinion albeit somewhat without prior knowledge of what you guys have been dreaming up. This is a closed group scenario who react when something doesn't go with the grain I am afraid.

Mako, relax mate. The majority is with you and so am I.

Hi Matt

Fri, 2009-06-05 08:09

I hope we are still going ahead with this. I just want to be able to get some tips from someone with rod building experience and to catch a fish a rod that I have built myself.
