Bass Boys, 28th Dec
Shaun (Shabba) is a good mate of mine and fishes with me alot. He recently said to me, my uncle Michael is coming out from the UK Ryan and he has caught a sambo before (a big one) but he hasnt got a big deepwater fish and was keen to have a go!
I said yeh, when he arrives i'll get him out there weather permitted. Yesterdays forecast was looking good and headed out gentlemans hours. The easterly was still blowing and I took my time getting out there and marking heaps of new ground on the way out!
On the way out and at the destination I was supprised at seeing no boats, despite the boat ramps being packed out. On arrival at the deepwater I started searching, took me a while to locate some fish but not bitting on jigs or baits mmhhhh. Not content with that i said to the guys a bit of patience and I will find them!
The outcome;
Shabba got a double headed of Bass Groper on patternoster but lost one of them half way up, put up a great fight indeed;
Next drift, it was Michael turn and after seeing Shabba's fish Michael dropped the baits over slowly thinking of the pain ha ha. Michael got a few touches and I said dont strike just let it take the bait. The rod fully loaded up and he was on. He got a double headed and make him work hard with the fish taking drag off my reel with a strong setting. Shabba and myself were pissing ourselves as he engaged into a figh with 2 big Bass Groper from the deepwater and we are talking a trout fisherman ha ha LOL
Michael did extremely well, the outcome coming to my boat;
Both fish were Michaels (RH person) - double header - but obviously he couldnt hold up both ha ha LOL
I said we'll I'm happy with that lets go in, the boys said you have to drop Ryan, I thought one drop with jig and we're going as its along way home. Drop my Sanme jig and got a Baracoutta, I said OK one more drop as I cant finish on that note, one more drift and whamo i'm on!
Ended up a Blue-Eye Trevalla on Sanme 650 jig;
** 4 drifts, left them bitting, all fish were brough up manually and the Bass Groper weighed between 26.5kg and 28.9kg on my digital scales (frames will go to research)
** Was a great session fella's, next trip sambos for Michael, will seem like easy work that will ha ha!!

Top stuff
Nice haul lads, good to see nothing has changed with Ryan amongst the fish. Certainly would have been funny to watch a trout fisho getting his arms ripped off. :)

Great fish Ryan once again
Looking at the pic of the blue eye trevella I'm trying to understand how the assist hook was rigged to the jig. Maybe the assist is just twisted around the line? From the pic it appears that the assist is attached to a point perhaps some 75-100mm above the jig?

Actually that is just the
Actually that is just the fin. It does look like the line but it seems to just go behind the fish, you can see it up near the back of Ryan's hand too, below (beside) the jaw.
I think most people just rig as follows; to a split ring, rig your jig, solid ring and a swivel. To the solid ring attach your assist cord and hook. Then you just tie your line to the swivel.
To tie directly to a split ring isn't advised, its a pretty easy way to loose your gear and your fish.

Deepwater!
Thanks fella's, yes deep water being to 500m deep!
Normaly I would jig up the species for myself but was happy to sit back and let the boys fish, was very satisfying!
Cheers Dasho, yes having an owner/operator of a Tackle Shop that is a diverse fisherman makes the difference, well said mate!
Alan, from that depth fish come up spiriling and the mono was wrapped around my assit hook. Very common with Blue-eye Trevalla as they fight head down!

Tks guys
Ok I see it. From the pic that would make the length of the assist almost as long as the jig then?

Assist length!
Yep, KC made those up for me when he was in WA and we were onto deepwater fish on jig. A bit long indeed but they still do the job =)

what more can i say, it was
what more can i say, it was an awsome day on the water. 1 me & michael will never 4get. yes it was awsome 2 pull up the bass from the deep. but it was all down 2 ryan's knowledge & experience of fishing & been able 2 read his sounder, 2 put us on 2 fish like that. that's what makes him such a diverse fisherman. he sure has put me on 2 some big fish, i did not think i would get bigger than the 22kg dhu, i got with him, then i got the 26kg harpuka & now the 27.9 kg bass, what next ???.
once again m8, thank's 4 a top day on the water, & 2 take out my uncle from the uk & put him on 2 a double header like that.... cheers

Good work with the deep fish, must be nice to have the confidence to go out and grab a few top quality fish like that for tea and head home.
Also Ryan thanks for the Almanac info, didn't do us much good though, plenty of action but no big mulla's for us.
