When one of mine died, i went with the option of one cranking and one deep cycle battery. Rewired all the house side to the deep cycle. I still have the 1 / both / 2 / off switch, plus simple on / off to the deep cycle. All the radios, lights, sounder, deck wash, live tank and bilge pumps run off the deep cycle. All the cranking battery does is start the motor.
I run the switch on "1" which is the cranking battery to put a charge in that. When the voltage starts to drop on the deep cycle (monitored through the sounder) i switch it over to "2" to charge the deep cycle.
Will install a VSR some time down the track.

Check what cca your motor
Check what cca your motor recommends should be in your book. Then choose a battery rated higher. I use 2 hybrid style batteries and alternate them each time i go out. The battery shop i work for sell century , I'm on my second set and have got 4 yrs from them..

They r a lead acid battery
They r a lead acid battery just designed to run electronics etc and be a starting battery . You can get agm batteries that do the same just a lot more expensive. The optima blue series r designed to do the same thing but cost what 2 lead acids cost. Most batteries that have screw type terminals and a normal terminal r most probably hybrids. Fyi the batteries i am using are century 730 marines as i mentioned above its the 2nd pair ive had 1st pair lasted 4 yrs these t 2 yrs now no probs. Hope that made more sense than the 1st post lol.

Randall, get that VSR sooner than later
I have long experience with dealing with dual battery setups, but the VSR just takes it ot the next level. They are not expensive, and all you need to do, in your case is connect it in parallel across your common switch, so that when you are running on 1, it is charging 2 all the time ( when voltage on 1 goes above 12.7v or whatever the VSR is set for)
here's one www.ebay.com.au/itm/VOLTAGE-SENSITIVE-RELAY-12V-VSR-140A-DUAL-BATTERY-/132017367107 supposedly the same is the Narva without the labelling, the one I got was from stores.ebay.com.au/autoelecau currently out of stock www.ebay.com.au/itm/EXPRESS-POST-NARVA-61092BL-VOLTAGE-SENSITIVE-RELAY-12V-VSR-140A-DUAL-BATTERY-/291609803717
I've found the autoelecau webstore very good for all auto sparky/marine stuff.

When you say in parrellel
When you say in parrellel across the existing switch, i would need more explanation of that because i see on the back of the vsr there one side marked red, and one not. And yet both sides of the existing switch are in effect positive arent they?

Just a quick question, if the VSR shits itself is there a possibilty it could ruin both batteries?

Possible but not likely. The
Possible but not likely. The more likely fault would be that the relay wouldnt close when its meant too so the second battery would never get charged via the VSR. You would work that out pretty quick though if that was your only way of charging it.

I was looking at the BEP
I was looking at the BEP brand but what has been suggested above is a much cheaper option.

You need to wire it
so that it will connect 2nd battery to the 1st battery when the switch is on I. ( if 1 is your start battery) -effectively the same as putting it on Both, but you are only starting on 1, your ancilliaries will be running on 2, but 2 will be getting charged the whole time that 1 is above the VSR's cut-off point, which will be almost immediately after starting. If 1 is down a bit, you can then go to Both to help start. As with any dual battery system, putting it on Both if 1 is completely dead will kill 2 also, goes without saying. I'll see if I can draw you a picture, unless someone has a simple diagram already to hand?

Pinching a pic off the web
Your negatives will already be joined together, so you just need to go across yopur 1 and 2 terminals. The negative feed to the vsr is just to actually enable the VSR to operate, and the wiring between the VSR and the terminals only has to handle the charging currrent, so 10mm2 is heaps--it will never be passing Start current
