Battery ok?

Hi, checked the battery in the 4.88M Quintrex seabreeze I bought 6 weeks ago, it is an Exide deep cycle 725CCA 115AH which is 2 years old, I guess it is big enough to power/start everything, I have had no trouble with it, do you think I should get a new battery or keep it for a while?

Bright spark?

When I had  boats , I always put the exsisting boat battery in the 4wd or car if it would fit, and put the new one in the boat,

cause cars dont hit reefs and sink etc if the motor dont start.

I would double check the acid level , prob found under a flat cover ( prise off with a small flat blade screwdriver) and then remove

sunken caps ( best thing to remove them is a 20 cent piece) as screwdrivers etc just munt the plastic out.

Being the end of summer , it will get you through to layup, and buy a brand spanker for next summer.

I prob buy 1-2 batts  a year between all my bikes, cars etc, and no matter what the brand , size etc find its all a bit russian roulette with lifespan.

No I dont buy fullriver etc , but do buy quality , and sometimes you get 2-3 years , and sometimes you  get 6 years out of cheapie.

Also we sometimes kept the 3 year old one on charge in the shed on the trickle , and took it out with us in a plastic battery box for running spotlights , or

I guess electric reels etc , therefor saving the main for starting.

That seems like a good size for a 4.88 , I take it for a 70hp , You prob dont need anymore.

I like the 20cent idea. I got 5 years out of my 200series clean skin battery's just about to the day. One died so I replaced both now the other is a back up battery used for pumping fuel. Pretty good life span imo

Take it out and get it load

Wed, 2017-03-22 07:15

Take it out and get it load tested. If its ok keep it on trickle charge when not in use.  You should get another couple of years out of it.

If you leave it on a trickle

Wed, 2017-03-22 09:17

If you leave it on a trickle charger, make sure you test it after leaving it uncharged for a day.

Otherwise the first time you find it wont hold a charge, is when you actually need it to hold a charge...

 I wouldn't worry to much

Thu, 2017-03-23 11:33

I wouldn't worry to much about that the c techs and other chargers now days are called smart chargers for a reason. They will bring your battery up to spec and then click back to  maintenance mode. If you r concerned about it just charge it for a few days every 4 to 6 weeks then take it of charge. Come into the shop and we can explain more .

Wed, 2017-03-22 10:50

Any Battery car, boat etc should be recharged (trickle charged overnight) every 6 months this will double life of battery, told to me by battery rep . also if no room for second battery buy one off those jump start packs can jump start 4wd and can be used for phone ipad etc unit & all attatchments in a wallet. Cost about $120.

Deep Cycles aren't meant for starting

Wed, 2017-03-22 12:50

meant for a steady discharge/recharge cycle , such as on camping and caravan power supply. Don't stop using it, just be aware, and when replacing, don't get another deep cycle, unless it is for a second battery to power accessories. As others have said, get it load tested, and yes, if you leave them on a trickle charger, you may not know they have failed in the meantime. Although the more sophisticated C-Tek chargers will give you an indication.  Boat batteries tend to have a shorter life than car batteries.

deep and meaningful.

Wed, 2017-03-22 20:26

I think you will find its a hybrid or whatever they call them , cause its got that 725 cold cranking amps rating, as well as the

115 a/hr rating.

I have 2 x ssb deep cycle dry cell A.G.M,S in the GQ , and there the same 750cca, and 105 or something a/hr,

And would never go back to regular lead acids again.

( I do have a solar panel, and the ctek dc to dc , with the smartpass booster as well)

but why do boat batterys fail earlier than their road going cousins , simple realy car batterys dont have the shit beatten out of them like boat batterys  do, why do batterys cark it every 2 years in a harley , its because they have the battery box back to back with the oil tank which over heats the battery eventualy killing it sorry for the rant

batterys

Thu, 2017-03-23 23:17

the thing is rechargable batterys like to be discharged , as well as charged, if you keep a battery consantly on trickle charge it will eventually die , so what you should do is occasionaly take it of charge and apply a load to it then put it back on charge, doing that will extend your battery life and dont think 12 volt batterys are the awnser to for all boats most comercial vessels run banks of 6 volt or 1.5  volt  batterys  to run at 24 volts  i have no comersial intrest in them but in my pinion odessy  batterys are about the best battery you can get , gell filled will work upside down  and will hold a charge for ever

You could discharge your battery in your driveway or you could jump off the net and actually just take your boat out fishing to take some charge off your battery

Hey bud if its working ok and your prepaird to buy another to replace it now might be a good time to set up dual batterys that way you will get the full life out of the battery you have and when one is on its way out you will always have a newer battery on board. Cheaper than changing 2 out at the same time next time round if there the same age if you go down th at road

 If you have dual battery

Sat, 2017-03-25 07:52

If you have dual battery system it is best to change both out at the same time - if you don't the battery on its way out can and will bring the other newer battery down and kill it.

thats not right Paul.

Sat, 2017-03-25 17:05

 Not correct sorry Paul.

If you have a dual battery system and ever run them at the same time EXCEPT to start when one is flat, then you may as well not have a dual battery system.

Honestly, I have seen this SO many times in my lifetime, and often by experienced skippers.

"it wouldnt start on Bank 1 this morning so I started it on both and left it there to charge. Now it wont start on both"

For the exact reason you put above.

If you use your dual battery system as it should be used it will never happen as you say and you only change a battery as its losing its ability to hold a charge.

The correct way to use it, is only ever have it on both when you cant start on one, then immediately swap it to one or the other to charge.
If the dual battery system is a VSR, a bad battery should not be able to drag the other one down

agree with you up to the point

Sun, 2017-03-26 20:29

i do agree with you , but switching your battery isolater switch while your outboard / inboard is running is a recipe for disaster , the isolator will draw an ark and if there are fuel fumes hanging around (as there is when you struggling to start your boat ) your risking an explosion , also it dosent do the contact surfaces of you isolator switch any good

That is exactly what a Cole Hersee type switch is designed to do Peter, and you do not switch it thru the off position.

The current it switches when charging is minute compared to what they can handle.

Switching from "both" to "1" or "2", it is impossible to go thru "off" unless you get too excited and turn too far.

Any petrol boat that has the Cole Hersee, or any non intrinsically safe switching mechanism mounted in an area where fumes accumulate is going to blow up sooner or later and is a bomb waiting to explode

Can you pull-start your motor?  I had a 90hp 4stroke once that was surprisingly easy to pull-start.  Saved me when the battery died.  My current boat is a bit big for that so now have a dual setup.
