Beach Fishing

Hey guys looking to get into the beach fishing scene and am after some advice on getting a quality reel. Looking to spend upto around $200 as im just getting started but have no idea what will do the trick.

Not sure whether to use braid or mono either and how heavy to go with the line???

Was having a look at the Shimano Spheros 8000 but again not to sure. Hoping to target some winter tailor, mulloway and salmon early next year when they run.

Any advice or recomendations would be much apprectiated, cheers

diawa m cast 6000

hey mate. iv got a diawa m cast 6000 and has been great. great reel and you can pick them up for around $120 any most tackle shops.

i run 10kg mono on it and has done the trick with tailor, salmon, pink snapper and rays. and if you wanted heavier line on it for big mullas you could just spool up the 2nd spool with heavier line. would defenatly recommend having a look at it.

good luck..

For a first beach reel you

For a first beach reel you can't beat a Penn Spinfisher SSM. I'd probably go for the 850 if your going to target mulloway a fair bit. Reels don't get much tougher than a Spinfisher. Will set you back right about $100. Not sure if it's still on (someone here will know & chime in I'm sure) but I think there is a special at the moment where you can get the Spinfisher spooled with braid for $99. Spool it up with 25lb braid & you'll be right to catch most things you'll come across other than large sharks, so long as it's on a decent rod with a bit of grunt that is.

$99 at BCF at the moment for the 850/950 sizes, paired up with a nice 12 foot surf rod and it wont let you down.

Another tick from me

I have a Spinfisher 850 and it's a throw away item at the price and is pretty unbreakable. I paid $100 for mine. As for line, I am a braid man but low stretch mono is good and cheaper. 10' or 11' graphite is a good companion for a rod. I use a Eupro Cyclone but there are others out there.

Im running a 950 with low

Im running a 950 with low stretch mono 25lb on a Wilson regal 13 ft for big stuff

And a 750 with 15 lb on a nice light  Flicky 10 ft rod not sure of the brand great for casting lures for tailor but will handle most bigger fish as well

Spinfishers are great for beach they don't mind eating a bit of sand tough cheap reel

I used to use them when I was professionally fishing for mackerql

So the drags deffinatly hold up well to big fish I caught 47 mackerel on one one day sore arms the need day

Getaway outdoors deal...

Sun, 2012-07-15 18:28

The deal finishes tomorrow, if anyone is still interested.... I picked up a 750 today, spooled with 30lb braid.  Not many left, but they said if you're willing to put down a deposit now, they'd charge you the sale price when the next delivery arrives.

Could anyone recommend a good surf rod to pair this with?  Not looking for anything too flash, just a solid reliable performer.  Budget would be $150 max.  I will be mostly targeting tailor, but also salmon when it's in season.  Probably using lures more often than bait...

thanks in advance

Just got a Spinfisher 850 loaded with 50lb finn braid, they are a simple reel and you can load a hell of a lot of line on them for beach fishing. As mentioned for the price you cant go wrong!

I also have two slammer 560's, ones a live runner, these loaded with finns 30lb, they do all of my beach/rock lure and mulie casting. Awesome drag system, can take an absolute beating, have caught many big fish on these including big spanglies, tuskfish and cod.

But the 850 ssm used to retail ~$220 so if these start somewhere near that and add in 300m or more of braid and you've blown your budget out of the water and you still don't even have a rod.

I'd go the ssm. For starters load it up with mono and put the savings on the two towards a decent rod. That'll give you a solid combo that you can fish with for years.

From there things get ugly ha ha. Doesn't matter what you buy, in the future you'll want to upgrade it. There's no doubt people with Van Staals desperately waiting for the new and improved version to come out because it's 3 grams lighter.
