There not bad

though i did see one break in the top 3rd during last years salmon season for no apparent reason.

I've got a Rovex Bario 12ft and it's a good solid rod for the price, @ $125.

posedian 5

Tue, 2010-11-30 15:40

posedian 5 piece

purglass...older style, lil more heavy but nearly unbrakable and my go to rod for 8oz leads plus bait into a 25 knot souwester

loomis franklin

saltiga surfs but r high mount and way too high at that for my liking

newer rods are lighter thinner and snap more often...its the trade off for less weight

wots the shimano tiralejo worth atm and  is it the 13ftr

what you want to cast

Tue, 2010-11-30 19:50

It all comes down to what you want to cast.

if you want to cast 6oz lead with a big bait you wont find much under $400

as mentioned by matmiller the rovex bario/aureus punch well above their weight and are a great cheap lightweight graphite rod i have one and use it as my tailor combo, it has a good casting action.

I was searching for a tiralejo for myself the 1300s 3piece 13ft with a 240g casting weight, sadly shimano discontinued these and only make the overhead model now which doesnt suit me. 2nd hand they seem like hens teeth

most stores carry the saltiga ballistic which is a better rod and is pretty expensive but one of the only other heavy rods off the shelf worth considering with its 10oz cast weight but at $650 its a big outlay not everyone can afford.

i also looked at getting a custom rod like the poseiden 499 mentioned but it seems there isnt alot of interest from a few rod builders i spoke to as they reckon the tiralejo/ballistic off the shelf rods are better value for money, and if the ballistic is too long from the butt to reel seat they would rather modify it to suit which whacks another $100 on top of an already expensive rod

any rod can break but i like the characteristics of the graphite rods better. hope this helps and if you find anything else that fits the bill let me know as i am still looking

cheers

Lemax President Royal

We regularly get good feedback on the Lemax President Royal.

The 9ft through 12ft rods are popular from the south-coast salmon run through to the spinning season at Quobba.

Well priced too.

If you can find one - An OZFLEX 12ft one piece, bloody good rod but I tried to buy another one, the guys at Tackle Shack said he was not making them anymore(maybe google it or def call around). I have seen a few 2 pieces around or a SNYDER Glass same problem though very hard to find. If you can transport it I would only use a 1 piece rod. Good Luck.

New Shimano Surf rods...

Fri, 2010-12-03 17:46

Shimano just release a range of mid-priced surf rods. Good value with good looks to boot.

We just receive stock of the new Aerowave series of surf rods.

One particular standout is the graphite composite model.

12ft rated 6-12kg and 2-6oz cast weight.

At only $159rrp its pretty good value.
