Chicken necks Get them from
Chicken necks Get them from the pet food section about $4kg.
And then use the blowies that you pull up in the nets. Just slice there guts and put em strait back on the bait clip.

Trumpeters
Must be the only thing in the ocean that eats them. Usually start with spleen and fish for KG's between pulls, always end up with a few trumps, cut em in half and top up your pots every pull. Everything eats spleen, only crabs eat trumps.

Aromatic chicken wings
Aromatic chicken wings marinated overnight in thai fish sauce , served topped with a crushed mulie .. entices the more discerning crabs rather than the riff raff that settle for dog bones .

lamb necks if i don't have
lamb necks if i don't have the cages fitted otherwise it's mulies and chicken necks in the cages for Pilbara crabs. I don't like food too strong otherwise you'll see your pot float screaming off in a bow wave as the sharks pull it around.

yep lamb necks are your best
yep lamb necks are your best bet. I'd advise against using any type of fish baits in the Mandurah estuary. There are a lot of Rays about in there, and they will end up destroying your nets as well as eating your baits.
Blowies are prolific, spleen works well but loses all is blood reasonably quickly.
Necks work well.

I went crabbing in Mandurah
I went crabbing in Mandurah last and used chicken wings in 5 pots and mullet in the other 5. Both worked very well and I'd probably say the chicken wings JUST outfished the mullet. I caught some of the biggest blueies I've seen in a long time in Mandurah. I'd say half the catch were around 10-15mm over size.
Do the right thing and there will be fish tomorrow.

Mulies
Another one for mulies here also. They will out fish nearly everything. Make some bait packets out of gutter guard and a couple of mulies in each. If the crabs are on, you will need to refresh your baits often and you will need to be constantly on the move, like once you've checked your last net, swing about and go back to the start.
cheers

one piece of advise is to get
one piece of advise is to get your bait before you go, I relied on the general store near the ramp and they only had mullet (perhaps because its early in the season).
Mullet got ripped to shreads by the blowies so use a bait cage if you want your bait to last. I think splean is the best for durability and catches well.
For me, 80% of our catch was undersize so well done to the guys who managed their bag!

I used chicken necks in the mesh pouches last week, were still useable after 2 sesions, not stinky to handle and cheap, bag cost me 250 from woolies
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Another tip is to keep
Another tip is to keep moving your pots. When we start a pull, we keep the first one or two nets in the boat and then drop them at the other end, thereby always moving to new ground.

+1 on that why wait for em
+1 on that why wait for em to come to you. I recon it's gona go off soon too it's been a slow/late season so far! Lots of undersize around, they can only get bigger.

All the above work
it just comes down to cost and durability. If you use fish the rays can be a problem. Spleen messy and gets "used" up quickly. lamb and chicken necks are pretty resistant to blowies and can be used without a cage. With spleen, any fish product if you dont use a cage its gone in a jiffy. And yes, blowies work very well. I tried that last year and was surprised. But just cant be buggered to cut them in half. One off the best in a cage is herring if you have a surplus. Just 4-5 cuts to the body either side and then check baits frequently. This idea of 30-40mins between pulls just dont add up when using fish.
Another thing an old timer told me about was fatty strips of offcuts from beef. Oily and the sinew in the offcut are touch. I use chicken necks or fish product (whichever I have) in the cage, and a clip above with fatty offcuts to both secure the cage from stingray attack, but also the craps seem to "chew" on this and stay around.
PS: the crabs at the start of the season, ie PreXmas was in the shallows, but now have moved deeper IMO. Still a few to be scooped in the Pinjarra side shallows.
