Neels...
Are you talking "any" price bracket ?
What do you mean by "graphic and illustration capable" ?

To be honest Paul

I dont know what he meant by that. Its for the Youngster and he is going to do a Graphic design and illustration course. Into photography and he wanted an EOS, but I suggested we post on here because of the photographers on here.

TKU for the info.

What are you up to now after Rally Oz days??

No need for high end models then...

Tue, 2012-06-05 09:34

Might as well cut out the top end models from both Canon and Nikon then...would be complete over kill.
Personally I would probably choose from these 3

5DmkII     (some good buys second hand at the moment due to people upgrading to the mkIII)   **

7D

60D

** given the new 5DmkIII is selling for $3600 and a new mkII is selling for around $2500, the second hand market is seeing the mkII's go for around $1800

Then look at lens options from there...

If the budget allows for it, go for L series, if not, well it's a bit of a mine field - everyone will have their opinions on whats good and whats not, when it comes to Canon consumer glass, Tokina, Sigma, etc.....

Since Rally OZ days have been shooting for Getty Images...so can be nice and busy with sports coverage and a bit of news & entertainment..

cheers,

Paul

Thanks for that info.

Appreciate it.

Yes I agree, buying an overkill is not on. Is the canon EOS range worth it or is the others better. He is transfixed on an Eos.

By the way - have you any idea what happened to Neil Blackbourne - Photographer I think freelance in Rally Oz and other motorsports?

Cheers

Neels

In a nutshell....

Tue, 2012-06-05 10:12

In a nutshell.... It's like Holden v Ford !
Both brands have their "good" models and their "bad"...There's no point buying one brand over the other, based on hearsay.

Go into a store and pickup the cameras and have a feel and play....he will soon know what feels right in his hands, then take it from there.

Going back about 20-25 years ago, I wanted to make the move from Pentax to either Canon or Nikon..

The first thing the sales guy said to me then was, forget about the brand, pick up the cameras....

Sure enough the Canon fealt great in "my" hands - so that's the way I went.

Back then, the decision basically came down to build quality and frame rate (how fast you could push a roll of 36exp from start to finish), unlike today where DSLR's basically do everything except make you a coffee !

Even today, if I pick up a Nikon D4, it just doesn't feel right !

Truth is, there is no perfect or ideal brand or model.

And that is from point and shoot's upto top level DLSR's !

As for Blacky....nah...I haven't seen him for years. Guessing he is still involved with the ARC.

Thanks for all the help Paul

Yes last I heard about Blacky he headed over to Sydney because his Mrs got a plush job over there. His name came up when I looked through an old album off photos when I was young and mad enough to compete in the WARC and Forrest rally.

When I get back (if) from up here in Kcity will catch up for a fish/beer.

Canon - 1Dmk4 or 5DmkIII

Mon, 2012-06-04 10:49

Canon - 1Dmk4 or 5DmkIII   ***

Nikon - D4 or D800

*** The new 1Dx should be hitting the market hopefully this month, which wlll blow just about everything else out of the water !

I've tested the 5D mkIII and to be honest, was not blown away by it !

The claim of the superior high ISO noise reduction is bullshit....It's great up to 8000, but after that you lose way too much image detail.. You are better off running Noise Ninja that costs around $80 to reduce the image noise IMO.

Or consider a rangefinder such as Leica's M9  !

I tested a micro four thirds Olympus OM-D E-M5 last week....very nice and the "retro" styling looks awesome !

I love my D700 Nikon

Mon, 2012-06-04 11:25

But it depends what you want to spend , in the Nikon as already mentioned the new D800 with 36MP would be hard to beat , in the cropped format the D7000 is the Nikon too  buy , then you start talking lenses ....mmmmmm also depends on your skill level and whether you want a camera to run on auto or whether you know how to drive one and get the best out of it on Manual Settings

I have one which I find is a great camera, especially out on the water. I have a 18-200mm lense which will get the long distance shots as well as the up close shots, this is handy as you don't have to change out the lense. Look up Cameras direct online, as you probably won't get a better deal anywhere else within Australia.

Agreed

Mon, 2012-06-04 21:00

But you put a 70-200vr11 on a D80 then put it on a D700 and the pics are in a class of there own and I won't be swayed on this as I have seen the diff my self ( I own both bodies) I am in the market to replace the D80 with the D800 and will soon carry 2 full fame Bodies in my kitbag ..a D700 and a D800

Yes as people say the lens is

Mon, 2012-06-04 16:53

Yes as people say the lens is what does it for taking photos, but a good full frame camera is a handy item to hang of the end of the camera.

I've gotta 7D,15-85mm kit lens.to start with.

Agree on lashing out on

Wed, 2012-06-06 10:27

Agree on lashing out on lenses, if you can justify going for a lens like a 24-70 f2.8 its well worth it.
