The best Outboard?

The 1999 yammy 90 2 smoke is costing alot of money in fuel on the long distance's I travel fishing (25 mile out, moving from spot to spot trolling etc & 25 mile back = 80 odd litres, $100bux a trip), So I am looking to put a new motor on the back of the Southwind UB670.

A mate has a hundred Yammy 4 stroke on his same Hull- UB670, it does the same 33 knot max as my 90 only Using half the fuel.

Talking to the dealers;-  they all say I should only buy their product coz theirs is the best. I am confused, So i am asking your opinions on what you recon I should bolt on the back of the Banana boat?

Has any one got the same boat with a modern engine on the back?

What engine would you recomend?

I was on the E TEC trip for a while then seen all the government recalls because of the expolsions they were having, so put me off a bit.

Hondas 90 with the VTEC seem like a good bet I am thinking

Suzuki have brought out a new 90hp

Yamaha have 50% of the outboard market so they must be good

merc = black death i am told

Mariner is a cheap Merc

Tohatsu are just cheap

Price is all within 2 -3 grand difference so not an object, Just want the best motor

You Opinions are welcome Please...

Cheers Justin

There is no real "best"

Fri, 2009-11-20 19:28

If you are deadset on a 90hp engine, then yamaha is out - its an 80 or a 100. If it was me, I'd look at the 100hp yammie, plus the 90hp suzi's, e-tec, and honda.

Weight wise, I think they are all line ball, so see who will give you the best deal out of the brands you are comfortable with.

Maybe see Men On Boats, they looked after Paul G with a honda for his beast.

Well, just to add fuel to the fire; Product Safety Recalls Australia: Boats

In there you can find recalls for Evinrude, Yamaha, Honda, Yamaha, Merc/Mariner, Yamaha, Honda, Honda and Yamaha. Does that make suzuki awesome because they never had a recall?

I think weight is going to be an issue for you in the older Southwind Bananas, not sure that they are rated to for transom weight and horses? Your old 2st probably weighs a lot less, the current yammy 2st carb only weights 119kg.

The suzuki is 158kg,  the etec is 152kg, the honda is 166kg, the yammy is 168kg*

*for the 20", the others weight listed is the 25"

the existing is 120kg

Fri, 2009-11-20 19:39

the newer Di 2 strokes and 4 strokes are give or take 160kg.

Whether or not it is OK to handle that, I have no idea?? I see a lot of them selling with 100hp yamaha's attached which is 180kg or thereabouts. I reckon Rod Pallister (Joondalup Boat Shack) would be worth a call - he knows them banana boats inside out.

Tough Question

Fri, 2009-11-20 20:17

With technology as advanced as it is now days it really comes down to personel preference, most are economic, quiet and reliable.

That's a great way to get the ol' two stroke VS 4 stroke debate cranking again.

I had a 115 etec on my old trail craft and it was great but when i upgraded to the current ride the dealer happened to be yamaha so i went with a 4 stroke and with plenty of hours on both i still love both motors.

Tough decision

Enjoy your new motor.

went from 2 stroke to 4 stroke

Fri, 2009-11-20 20:20

not long back,

only a 60 but yammie has not let me down

however if i bought another boat i would seriously look at the E-tec

but best to decide on your fishing style and this will help you decide......

there are marked differences i trolling Vs WOT between motors so do some research

project boat is right mate the evinrude is not a etech and not a new outboard probably pays to do research before a piss pull. the topic was what is the best out board to run and if i could afford a new outboard i would have a yammy!
and just on another note after having the evinrude that i have atm and the etech that we ran a while ago on one of dads boats im talking from experience not just a random sledge

servicing costs?

Sat, 2009-11-21 06:57

Sounds good.

What sort of hull are you pushing?

Does your motor have the vtec system on it?

How much does the 100 hour service average our at.

A day out on a long run out wide will cost me about $100 in fuel & oil, what will the honda cost you doing the same?

cheers greg

Hi.

Look at the Merc. "Opti" 90 too.

Probably the best 90 on Market. Haven't heard of a bad one yet.
They also one of the most economical too. Fuel. and Oil.

I checked them out, specs

Sat, 2009-11-21 07:04

I checked them out, specs are good. they are about twice the size of my motor, Too huge for the skinny banana boat I thought.

So Seems like honda, Soozi & Yammy are my best options Etec maybe.. Hmm

Thanks for all the comments Guys

Yammy 115 4 stroke

Sat, 2009-11-21 09:45

Just recently repowered to a 115 Yammy 4 stroke from an older Johnson. Went through a lot of reviews and discussions with boat stores. Couldnt in the end go past the yammy. I have found it excellent on fuel, which is what I was looking for.  I am also glad I dont get the two stroke fumes anymore. Especially on start up.

Best of luck choosing. Its alway nice to have a new toy.

Justin the 80 and 100

Sat, 2009-11-21 12:09

Justin the 80 and 100 fourstroke on the 22's are simply amazing. You may want to re jig the console forward a bit though to allow for the weight. The console should be over the center hatch , especially with the inbuilt tanks. With a 100hp fourstroke we would use about 6 to 8 litres an hour.

Be warned though, When you drive one set up right its like riding a surf board, it hard not to carve back and forth best setup ever....Wink

top speed difference

Sat, 2009-11-21 13:12

Thanks Rod

I took your prior advice with my boat and lowered the transom 50mm and put the console over the middle hatch Of the Ex SOCG boat.

That stopped the cavitation issue and tood away the bow slapping behavior its an awesome ride now. Surfboard is a good description as they ride on top of the water unlike my last deep V Hains Hunter which carved through the water.

3 things left to do now;-

  1. T top
  2. Repower
  3. Fill in the stainless handrail on the back third of the boat, I have nearly gone overboard on rough days with the knee high Gunnels...

With the repower, just wondering about the 80 v the hundred my mates 100 does 33knots flat stick. Can you remember or guestimate what an 80 would do I would guess 25 - 28? In my opinion better to have more speed available when there is a storm coming in.

Did you guys at freo Yamaha have a good stainless fabricator for T tops and handrails Rod? Can you remember their name at all?

Thanks again

The 99 75hp Yammy on my UB

Sat, 2009-11-21 16:40

The 99 75hp Yammy on my UB still goes very well and is good on fuel, but I would still like to up grade if given the opportunity. 4 stroke motors are almost double the weight and If I was to get a 80-90hp 4 stroke, then that's about twice the weight of my current motor. I don't know if that would be bad for it or not. I've asked that question before when I was thinking of changing over before.

Cheers
Dale

HI mate, I to have a yammy 2t

Thu, 2013-05-30 16:04

HI mate, I to have a yammy 2t 99 model. Yes getting a bit pricey to run. $100 to cover approx. 30 mile. On a 5.44m 5 ml Ali centre console. I am to looking at an upgrade although not willing to spend to much. Have looked at merc 115 saltwater approx. 390 hrs with controls, gauges $4000, mariner 115 2005 model, controls, gauges $4000. As the hull is getting of age don't want to spend to muc. Hoping to upgrade to a whole newer package in approx. 5 yrs.

If saving fuel is the only

Thu, 2013-05-30 17:06

If saving fuel is the only reason for the change then I wouldn’t bother because it will end up being false economy.  Assuming you can find a new motor for say $12 grand and find someone to by your motor for say $2000 you will take nearly four years (assuming you’re going out once a week on your standard trip and basing it on a 50% saving which is big) to break even alone.  This is not even taking into account the additional cost of servicing a 4 stroke or depreciation.

If on the other hand you are replacing for reasons of reliability or increased range then I know a lot of commercial guys that use Yamaha and rate them highly.

Hear what your saying Toby

Thu, 2013-05-30 17:24

Hear what your saying Toby but saving fuel also gives you more range with the amount you have on board too.  One of the reasons I'm considering an upgrade myself from a 1993 Johnno

DOH!! - just read your last line

I seemed to have done an "EDDY" and spoke whilst thinking of something else :-)

Depending on how far you plan to go offshore in the future

Fri, 2013-05-31 20:19

You may want to invest in twin outboards. I guess it just depends on whether you can afford it and also whether the transom is wide enough??

By far the most reliable outboard is the Suzuki 4-stroke lean burn as it is the most robust and durable outboard on the market today. It is basic and can be easily serviced etc. A good friend spoke to the main dealer at the Miami Boat Show who deals in mainly Susuki and Mercury and his recommendation was to stay away from Mercury as he has a workshop full of Mercury's under warranty waiting on repair and very few Suzuki's. My friend who has used Yamaha's for years feels like others, that Suzuki's are surpassing Yamaha's.

Etecs are good and fuel efficient but are too compact with electronics and a black box that could go very wrong when you are far offshore. My friend who has a UB670 chose commercial Etecs 4 years ago as they were the slimmest and lightest 90HP outboard around (that fitted his boats transom) at the time but is now changing over to the 90HP Suzuki 4 Stroke. He is currently using the same Suzuki's on a 30ft skiff and is getting 35-40 knots. He uses his boat for marlin and tuna charter fishing in Ghana.

if you want more info pm me with your transom width measurement and I will pass it on to him as he is very knowledgeable on this having done a hell of a lot of research.

cheers Frank
