Best spots outside of Perth to catch mudcrabs

Hi Everyone!

I was wanting to try my hand at catching mud crabs but not sure where the best locations are for them. If anyone can suggest some places to go I would be really grateful. Also I would like to ask if a licence is required to catch them as well.

Cheers

Can you advise me exactly where I can go to be successful?

Sun, 2014-04-27 04:18

Thank you Pendy! See my latest questions below. I would really appreciate your help if you know of an exact location where there are some. I am a first timer at this and would need to catch them from the shoreline as I don't have access to a boat unfortunately.

Any of the train stations in

Thu, 2014-04-24 21:50

Any of the train stations in and around the metropolitan area, more crabs than you can poke a stick at, big ones little ones..... some as big as your head. No license required just a permit for the zone you are in. If that doesn't work, as Pendy said....go north young man!!!

Cheers

All the creeks on the eastern side of Exmouth Gulf hold plenty of the buggers, the hard part is getting them out

Getting there

Fri, 2014-04-25 08:04

You have to cross the gulf by boat or negotiate miles of bush tracks and swamps on Uralia station [that is if Big Joe gives permission] to get there.

Very small

Fri, 2014-04-25 09:53

Was up in the creek at Miaboolia a month or so back before it dammed itself up and all we got were little ones.

Suspect it will take a long time for them to come back because of the water going stagnant when the mouth closed off and most of the fish caught inside died, much like the Wonnerup episode months back.

I think I need to have small tinny and a companion to go I think

Fri, 2014-04-25 14:43

My problem is not having a boat to get out to some these places. I have a 4WD which is a bonus I guess. I was watching a few videos on Youtube with one in particular where a Father and son where just hooking them one after the other from an embankment in a mangrove between Carnarvon and Broome. They said there location was secret one and I get that. I just have to keep researching where these secrets spots are. I was wondering if saltys come that far south to Carnarvon or Kalbarri or not.

Time

Hope you have plenty of time because there is some 1000 km of coastline from Carnarvon to Broome with literally hundreds of creeks that could or should hold muddies------good luck

Bunbury

Have heard of a few around Bunbury (Leschenault Inlet) and in Collie River near Australind, could save you a couple of hundred litres of fuel

No special license for them, just the RFBL if fishing for them from a boat http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Species/Mud-Crabs/Pages/Mud-crab-recreational-fishing.aspx

Bunbury for sure

Sat, 2014-04-26 16:37

I know someone who used to catch a few up north bring then down south release a couple in the collie river and eat the rest. Thats why they are down there and they are obviously going pretty good.

Down the coast

Sat, 2014-04-26 20:26

Do they release them all the way down the coast from Gero down to Augusta as well, might explain why they get caught in the Moore, Swan, Blackwood and Murray rivers plus in the Mandurah , Leschnault estuarys and all the drains round from Busso?

Traps

Sun, 2014-04-27 10:37

Traps are illegal in WA Kim. Have to use drop nets, a scoop or even a hook to extract them directly from their holes (unharmed).

Thank you for the heads up!

Sun, 2014-04-27 12:03

Hi Big John!

Thank you for letting me know that! I was looking at the rectangular traps from BCF as a starting point because I thought that was ones to use. Why are they alloed to sell them I wonder if that is the case?

Cheers

Yabby Trap

Sun, 2014-04-27 21:27

Agreed, but a yabby trap is totally different to a crab trap.

Where can I find them exactly?

Sun, 2014-04-27 04:14

It would really helpful if someone can give me an accurate location or directions of where they last went and caught a few. I know everyone has their secret local spots. But for a first timer like me I would really appreciate being told of a place where I can definitely find these mud crabs.

Cheers

 any where in the northwest

Sun, 2014-04-27 06:17

any where in the northwest that has mangroves and creeks.you can catch them with normal crab drop nets or you can walk in the mud flats and creeks and look for there holes and with a length of thin steel rod with a bend like a hook on the end you can slowly pull them out of there holes.you want directions, okay, take the port hedland to broome road and about 7klm before the degrey river bridge there is a station windmill track on your left,go downthis track until you see a line of mangroves to your left about 12 klm.leave the track and head for them, stop about 50 mtres  before.do not try and drive any closer or you will not get back out.walk through the mangroves with your steel hook and bag and you will come out onto a "beach" that is all mud.just look for small pools of water and you will see holes in them.put your steel rod into the hole and you will feel the crab inside, twist your rod around until the hook part is behind the crab and pull it out.takes a bit of trying to get it right but its pretty easy.if you are lucky and get there at the right time you can just walk along and pick them up,this only happens about twice a year.the place is called thelmas hole.be very carefull as they really bite and you are a long way from home.goodluck.sorry should have mentioned you take the old broome highway not the new one.

mate the point of my post

Sun, 2014-04-27 16:03

mate the point of my post was that you can get mud crabs any where north of carnarvon where there is mangroves and creeks, you dont have to drive all the way to port hedland, but if you want to the distance is about 1870 klm from perth.you can camp there well back from the mangroves but i wouldnt these days with a chance a stray croc may be around.also depends who the station owner is.the two times a year differed from year to year but was always after a king tide.being that it is a two and a bit day drive from perth it would be a very expensive way to get crabs, but if thats your thing good luck.

Another method > cram some

Sun, 2014-04-27 20:03

Another method > cram some stinky meaty whatever into a bait pouch of some sort ( Must be tough ) Weigh it down with something, attach a cord an chuck it in the drink. Leave it for 15 mins and SLOWLY retrieve, if it's a lot heavier than before its probably got a muddy attached to it. They are stubborn barstards they wont ( usually ) let go of it till near the shore. Use a rake or net to grab it just after it lets go right near the bank. Is an option when you cant get much of a vertical pull on your drop nets.
