Heading to Hamelin Bay this easter, any reports on the Salmon? Has anyone caught any, or anyone know the progress of the salmon? Thanks

Early days
It's still way early to be talking salmon in the capes. I would think with Easter being a bit late this year it should be a good time to get into some fish. Let's hope it's a good season and we all get our salmon fix for the year.

Same
as the last 3-4yrs. Water temp way too high for Salmon to begin their migration. Hell they're even getting Mackies out from Gracetown.
Be lucky if we get a 2 week run along the Capes like last season.
Pretty over it personally and will be joining the keen down Albany after easter.

There will definately be
There will definately be salmon from Anzac day onwards. This is our normal time we start fishing around the capes.
The lazy people only want the huge schools but in my opinion you can only wind in one salmon at a time.
Every year there are plenty of salmon if you can be bothered looking for them.

At hamelin bay you will be sharing every school with heaps of fisho's. Alot of them newbies. It get's a bit too much after a while. Find the purple patches elsewhere I reckon.

Happy to admit
I was wrong with my prediction.
Just got into a 1-2tonne school at a Capes beach this morning after work.
Pulled half a doz out of it with one being of exceptional size (8kg+)
Stoked!

Yep
A few dzn have been caught in the past couple of days , livies generally working better than Lures , both sides of the Cape. 8kg is a good fish Matt, gotta be happy with that one!

Like flies in Albany ATM, bloody things are everywhere you look now. Eating all out shark baits and live herring for sambos. Got onto a heap yesterday Arvo with the mrs along with a heap of other people. Watched a few hundred landed in a few hours with the most being caught on lures over bait.
always looking for a new challenge!!

Cheynes
I got back from Cheynes beach yesterday, we got into them, good size ones. Heaps of fun on light gear. Not heaps of schools there yet but the pros netted a 10t school on the first day I was there. It's a bit Sad tho when the family's try to catch them and not getting to catch one all day, then to watch the pros net a school out of casting range.

Had a school to ourselves at
Had a school to ourselves at Hamelin bay Thursday all day, everytime they moved out of cast range, the dolphins would herd them back for us, biggest went 7 1/2kg , couple bronzies following them also,
cast around 15 types of lures at them from SPs, metals , poppers and assorted minnows, only lure that would work was the smiling jack, even rapala wouldn't get a hit,
had a blast.

Your advise
Hi Super Peg
I am going to Hamelin Bay this weekend, I dont have a 4x4 wheel, where would you recommended for a good spot for fishing.
Ideally i would like to drive the beach and search for them, but I dont have that luxury of a 4x4.
Thanks.

Not many access options
Not many access options without a 4b Eric. Hamelin Bay Road is the only place your getting into without a 4b. Park up, start walking & look for the schools.

Holes
OK thank you,
What about salmon holes, is there any from hameilin bay to augusta, or north of Hamelin Bay, I could drive to? which would be ideal to fish for those without 4wd.
I really want to catch my 1st Australian Salmon. It pains me not having a 4wd

Still plenty of places to
Still plenty of places to try with a 2wd.....
Injidup for a starters - you can get right on to the point with a 4wd but 2wd will take you down the main track near to the end of the peninsula - if i can walk it with a 9ft board and bare feet you should be able to manage it with a rukka and rod.
Bunker bay - Rocky point or the west end, nice walk along the sand and good for salmon, sharks and bread and butter stuff.
Hamelin as mentioned can be walked from the Southern end and in that area is Cosy Corner as well.
Im probably heading down this weekend in the 4wd and towing the Mrs. With the swell looking decidely average I will be hitting up some schools hopefully. Drop me a PM if you want to catch up or you need a ride.

The hardware seems to hold
The hardware seems to hold up as well, it's just the paint on them that doesn't last but IMO the more battle scars the better mr jack performs,
lost three Thursday! I'm all cleaned out so I'll need to hit a tackle store and restock for next weekend,

Hooked up to 18 today and landed 12. Was very slow going all day with the school pretty much shut down all arvo but a green zipbaits minnow Did the damage with 16 hookups.. Had to change hooks as they were Cactus and one split ring destroyed. Divers were the lure of choice for the day

Malimup
Was fishing down at Malimupon Sunday from the rocks. Was a cracking day. Water was crystal clear.
Got to watch the schools of salmon head towards us and start flicking lures at them. They seemed to be really fussy.
I caught one on a Smiling Jack and 2 more were caught on Halco Twisties. LOADS of herring around. I chucked one on as a live bait and landed it right in front of a school and they all swam past with no interest. Same with the sharks floating around. Weren't interested at all in our baits.
Great day fishing and a nice feed of salmon. Smoking some up for lunch today :)

I drove down from Perth for the day and hit up Bunkers Bay - fished it solid from 8am-1pm for not a single fish or sighting of a school. Spent a couple of hours at first at Rocky Point then worked the entire bay. Just a case of bad luck I guess as I know others have already caught fish there.

As mentioned the plugs and metals will cast further but I've used the jack off the beach plenty of times with results, if cast hard it tends to torpedo through the air and can result in a fair distance,
can only give it a crack,

They do...
...but usually salmon fishing from surf beaches requires long casts and these lures don't cast as well as metals/plugs/poppers. They are very effective lures, it's just a matter of putting them in front of the fish.
The sheltered, rocky headlands, like those found between Dunsborough and Cape Nat, are good places to use lures that don't cast particularly well 'coz the fish come right in...

Just a note to those of you
Just a note to those of you heading down to throw around stickbaits - we found the standard trebles and split rings on even the expensive Japanese brands were sub-standard with the trebles getting pretzled/snapping hook points and split rings getting opened. We personally use the Decoy Jigging Singles in 3/0s and 4/0s and Decoy Split Rings - 100% reliable, fantastic hook up rate and makes it easy to release the fish with minimal damage.

Choc - we were using a mix of Stella 3000 and 6000's and in our opinion were not over cranking the drag (and yes we've both caught a lot of Salmon in the past :). Once we switched over to some quality hardware we had no more issues.
Habanero - we were lucky that the few boaties that were out the day we were there used some common sense and didn't cause any conflict. Though looking at how close they were to eachother I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few multiple rod tangles :D

Sorry to be a sceptic, but it always seems to be 'tackle shop boys' promoting higher class gear.
I caught another six salmon today on Smilin Jacks with crushed barbs with the front treble removed. No dramas.
