Inside Reef at Coral Bay

Hi Guys,

Heading up to Coral Bay in June. I have searched the site and got some great info. Every year i have the same delemma. I have to choose between taking either a 4.2m tinnie or quad bike and dads 12ft river tinnie. Having a bike is great to get to some of the remote beaches and fishing landbased, and the bigger boat allows for some better fishing.

What is everyone thoughts on going north of the boat ramp in a 12ft tinnie, I normally only head south. I wouldnt be going out near the north passage ( not comfortable in a 12ft tinnie ). I would pick my days carefully, but would it be worth fishing say half way from Mauds out to the passage. would it be unsafe out there, should i just head south.

( 1 powerball and can take the 4.2m tinnie and the bike )

any advice would be much appreciated

fishing there has gone backwards noticeably each year

since that huge ramp was put in. Now the charter boat are

Having to go 40 - 50k offshore to get fish. Sometimes further.

Some would call that progress.

I agree with you there. Harder and harder to get a good feed. Will always support Seaforce, might have to go a bit further, but always a great day with them.

if your going on a full out fishing trip I would keep going to onslow coral bay unfortunaly gets hammered year around, with your dingy you could make wards reef and bowers ledge and possibly black ledge of onslow , probably make it to thevenard too with the right weather . Onslow is fish rich just have to have the weather and if you don't you can slip up the river

 having had to fish inside

having had to fish inside the reef with poor weather i'd just trip it south, burely up and hope some spanglies come in or some trevally. it was pretty barren out there and i didn't find anything interesting untill i pushed across to the reef north of Mauds landing but just found sharks anyway.

I feel sorry for the local fisheries of Exmouth and Coral Bay, the number of boats heading north before Easter and South this weekend just scares me. I'm sure 75% where headed for these two locations.
