Best Tough Beech Spin Reel
Submitted by crasny1 on Sun, 2013-04-28 08:53
Now we all know A Stella or Saltiga is tops for spins, but I would loathe to take one on to the beach with all that sand etc.
Just wondering price no issue with the best toughest spin reel would be for the beech.
Considering what the yanks do with their Tailor (bluefish) fishing using Van Staal's whether that would be up there.
Cheers
Neels

The best
would have to be the Daiwa Saltiga Surf. Purpose built for salty conditions, huge drag and long cast spool.

Forgot about that one
Cheers Matty. How do you rate the Van Staal compared. It is rough as guts.

Only had
1 experience with Van Stalls and that was on Al Bevans boat jigging for Sambos.
Obviously solid as a rock and watertight but heavy as hell and a bit too 'stiff' in the handle for my liking.

Spheros
How bout a spheros, mine has been everywhere and never missed a beat, been covered in sand plenty an dunked a few times yet still manages to pull in the big ones, plus has a 20kg drag so can stop about anything
1 from the beach is worth 10 from a boat

Shimano baitrunner 6500
Had mine for at least 15 years, even been pulled into the surf before. Sold it last year and still working awesome. Replaced it with the 6500b version. Can't go wrong for around 150 bucks.

Why replace the 6500A with the B version?
I have the A version and can only fault the spool movement due to sloppy gear clearances.
I understand th B version has the anti reverse bearing instead of the dog pawl set up in the A. I would prefer the pawl over an anti reverse bearing any day for durability, maintenance and strength.
I have used mine mostly on the rock walls/jettys and boating. The fine sand of beach fishing has always worried me. I do maintain my own reels, thanks Alan Tani and co, but really can't be bothered with cleaning sand out of a baitrunner four or so times a year.

Maybe that's why the 'a'
Maybe that's why the 'a' version I had lasted so long and durable. Sold it to a fellow fishwrecked member, hope its still alive. The new version feels ten times better but I haven't put it through its paces yet as I do most of my fishing from a boat nowadays. Had no idea about the 'pawl' etc..
i reckon beach fishing puts the reel in the harshest environment. A simple reel with few bearings will do the job, less to go wrong and simpler to take apart when dropped in the sand. Still remember when I bought a penn applause years ago with heaps of bearings, dropped it in the sand on its first trip. Sounded grindy ever since.

+ another 1 for Spheros
I can put a vote in for the speros too.... I have a 14000FB that has been getting abused for 5-6 years now and is still going strong.. probably a bit too big for what I need but good all the same....

Had a Spheros
Had it only on the boat and a bit dissappointed. Other reels like the Saragossa way out performed it.
But not used beech fishing. In Karratha beach is not much fun, but now going FIFO to Mandurah need a beech setup again (aswell as a southern boat fishing setup) Got that covered I think.

Cheers Guys
Will try one, not sure which. The refined reels I have just wont do on the beach IMO. A brand new StCI4 started grinding after one accidental dunk and I wasnt happy. Need amore robust set off reels.
2 smallish for the B&B fish, and 2 Grunters for set baits. Even my trusted Saragosas I dont believe is up to the job. 5yrs ago used Penn Slammers but not happy withem either lately.

i would have thought the sarsgosa would be the way to go on the beach. The ergonomic handle plus good line lay system and easy to maintain gearbox makes for a tough reel and solid choice imo. forget the spheros the saragosa IS a spheros but upgraded

Didnt find it that way
Mate I have/had about 10 Saragosas and as a boat spin reel cant fault them in every size from 4000 -18000.. I have had 3 Stella's and I dont rate them that far below. But Beach?? They are to refined IMO. You need a rough as guts workhorse or a totally waterproof monster. As I said money no option.

Van Staal and Zeebass are very popular but I'm a big fan of the Penn Torques.

I'd put my alvey and my alvey skills up against any one of those spinning reels if it was down to toughing it out with something big from the beach.

Saltiga
my Saltiga's go to the beach , rocks , the boat and even on the rod rack on the top of the ute.
The only place they don't go is in a display cabinet.

couldnt agree more dale replaced my 2 651e5 alvey's with teflon washer and i've never looked back(the originals are crap and dont do the reel justice) i get at least 700m of platapus platnium 50lb mono on the deep spools and always take 2 with me knowing i can fix anythink on them. for the price you cant go wrong and will out last any spin reel on the market. imo

I like my Daiwa Emblem X and my two Emblem Pros for beach or rock fishing. The X i bought in 1997 and the 2 Pros i bought in 2003 and 2004. All still work perfectly fine and only get a service about once every 2-3 years. They regulary get covered in sand(as much as i try not to) and then just get a light hose off at home and inox. Have drowned the Emblem X twice and one of the Emblem Pros once and after a service, good as new. Only just replaced a bearing in the Emblem X this year.
In saying that though for my heavy beach work i have a Spheros 18000 which cranks the poo out of sharks, rays and Mullas :D

i have 2 realy old penn spinfishers that have never let me down. not the best with braid though but thay have been in the sand, water and one of them has no paint on one side of the reel where i left it in the rod holder over night in a big storm. sand blasted the crap out of it that night and still works perfect. im waiting for my shimano ultegra to come in the mail so i can load it up with braid and give it a go.

penn slammers or spinfishers (the old ones), the new ones look a piece of plastic shit. The slammers (old ones anyways) are all metal and bullet proof motackle got em for cheap as, 76o the good size I got 330m of 25lb mono.
Fishing and catching are two different things. But i want to learn how to catch.

Such a personal preference topic
....but, I reckon you've all missed the best value beach reel. Try using a Shimano Thunnus...step up from a Baitrunner (probably a couple of steps actually), but still has bait runner functionality. We still use Stella's on the beach, but the Thunnus for around $300 is a good all round option at a reasonable price.

I use my saltigas on the beach, boats, rocks etc.
With the exception of the van staal's and those similar made reels, anything that is "Dunked" will need some tlc after to restore the reel and minimise further damage. My 5000H(magseal model) saltiga went in briefly and it needed a good clean up and service.
I did have a 850SS (Non USA Model) that spent some time in the sandy water and it did alot better than expected but it was still cleaned out once home.
Dont spend up big if your worried about the beach ruining the reel. Go for a Spinfisher or even have a look at the PFlueger salt range. Both reels are under $150 and are proven reels, at the price if they get a bit of sand in them it wont hurt you as much.
