Best Ute's

My parents are looking to buy a new ute (4wd Diesel) and wondered if anyone has a Toyota hilux, Mitsubishi Trition (MN or ML), or Isuzu D-max if anyone has one could you tell me about it.

I've had

a Hilux, Colorado, Rodeo, D-Max and Triton - all diesel, all 4WD except the Rodeo (but almost identical to the Colorado).

For me, I'd buy a Hilux.

For me to get an equivalently specced hilux to the same as my dmax would have been 13k more than i payed is really worth 13k more?Doubt it

For me, a company car so it was 30% less.

But whether its $13k better is up to the individual - for me I think it is. I'd rather pay more for (IMO) a better car.

I have just bought a d-max. just a single cab 4x4. did want to by a hilux but was not going to pay 10k extra for one. i am happy with the d-max good power and good on fuel. i carry a 600kg toolbox on the tray and tow a 750kg trailer around 1000km a week. i also like the tray hight of the d-max compared to the hilux.

Unbreakable Hilux

Tue, 2009-11-10 19:01

I very do much like hilux's not because of there looks or accessories i like them because they have one the best engines and are one of the most unbreakable utes because we still have a 25 year old hilux and it's had no rebuild or major repair and its still going strong.

ive got a hilux and it is a great car very reliable and good on fuel and good offroad id recomend it but another option is a ford ranger we have these at work and they are pretty good utes lots of power and pretty reliable we towed a big trailer with a few tonnes of gear. all the way to broome 4200 kms in 6 days and had no problems with it.

All depends on how much you want to spend. For the price of a Navara you wont find a better 4+4 in its price range and you would be suprised at how much power the 2.5 turbo diesels put out and the fuel economy is unreal. Go the Hilux if you have the money I driven heaps of them and think there way overated personally.

just had a isuzu D-max in Thailand and it was a dream to drive. I also always had isuzu's in Africa and we had them as farm utes. Tough as nails.

My first choice would be a Hilux (if money was not an issue), but value for money on a spec for spec basis, it's hard to beat the Isuzu D-max.

Yeah I've got a new GLXR Triton 2.5 ltr turbo diesel. Top car, I use it to beach launch the quinnie which weighs about 800kg no probs. Also tow a tandem trailer around for work plenty of grunt. A fella I know has the new Ranger and he reckons it's the dogs bollocks. I think you have to compare price and power output these days as most of the mid range are pretty good cars.

got to agree with TAPOUT, hilux are overpriced and why do you think they got the nickname rolux?, the navara 3ltr td has heaps of power towing a boat loaded at a weight of around 3tonne, no probs and still got in excess of 450 to the tank cruising on 90kmh. also they have a wider wheel track than the hilux and longer hub to hub, had one and very reluctantly had to sell it. the dx model can tow 3tonne the str 2.8tonne

whoa?

pish posh faulkners.

navara is a poor mans hilux.

i work for a major construction company, and our fleet is loaded to the hilt with nearly every new 4wd ute in the market (navaras, hiluxs, tritons, rangers, colarados, rodeos, etc), and i've driven every one of them.

the 4L v6 petrol hilux pisses on all of them, second only to the 3L turbo deisel hilux.

my 4L petrol hilux pulls my loaded boat on tandom trailer at 110kmph, and i still get 500 to the tank in 4th gear (its a 5 speed auto), and is awesome off road, even with the pizza cutter tyres they supply with them.

Yeah, last trip back pulling nearly 3 tonne my towing machine did a 100 a couple of times..........when I slowed right down coming into towns.....LOL

The biggest thing to watch for with these utes, and the reason I didnt get one, is comfort. Both for the driver and any backseat passengers. Try and sit someone 6ft in the back. If their knees aren't jammed up in the back of the drivers seat then their head is touching the roof.

I drive a hilux for work, a new one too and i don't rate them as good as the old school ones, the 2.8L diesel ones where unstoppable, new ones are a bit sluggish when they take a beating clutch went at 50K. Probably not worth the extra money but then again you really can't beat the Toyota ruggedness.

Dunno about D Max owners but we have a 2wd T/D rodeo and man that thing revs hard in 5th gear pulling almost 3K at 100km/h, but very torquey off the line

I have heard good things about the tritons too, plenty of power and comfy as well

before that a 2.8 hilux.

strong dependable vehicles but yeh you pay the $$. Living and working out bush in the NT for many years all work vehicles were toyota. Those troopies are bullet proof.....

but considering the market these days and the marked difference in price I would look at getting something else if I replace the hilux.

would look at the triton first then mazda bravo then the space cab navara then probably the ford. but triton first after having (partneres car) a pajero.

at the end of the day no car ever roles itself....its the driver. learn how to operate and drive sensible off road and you wont have a problem!

It's more up to what you the driver prefers really... like damo said its the driver that makes the car what it is when offroad...

any of the utes above mentioned will perform on/offroad if you know what youre doing.

I can vouch for the D40 have been very reliable offroad and great economy onroad.

Plus they look awesome Wink

The old man has  a Hilux

Wed, 2009-11-11 12:39

The old man has  a Hilux extra cab. We chose it over the Navara as it felt smoother and the fact we have had Toyota's for years- they have never missed a beat. At the end of the day Get your parents to drive them all, then buy the one that feels the best and suits their needs.

PM me if you would like to know anything more about the hilux.

anybody else out there got 1? ive had a ranger for 2 years now and love it. goes better then my mates new navara and my old mans 07 ti patrol. its got heaps of torque and is awsome for towing. is pretty quick off the mark for a diesel too. the only thing i can fault on it is that it does not come standard with a LSD. cant say its better then a hilux tho as i havnt driven or been up against 1 off road before (beat a few taken off from the traffic lights tho ;))

Rodeo value

Have a Dual Cab Rodeo cant fault the vehicles ability on the beach. the price over the Toyota makes it a much cheaper option and does the same job. had a Triton for many years and the turning circle is huge. What ever the purchase make it a diesel

This brand debate is a bit like sounders

Wed, 2009-11-11 17:53

You can use a northstar (colorado/triton/navara/BT50 etc) - its cheaper than the other options and it does an OK job.

But at the end of the day, if you want a quality unit like a furuno (hilux) you pay the premium because it is better.

Why would they move it to taiwan and increase their costs? I think your mechanic is having a lend.....

You can get hilux made in Thailand or Brazil. Does Toyota make any whole cars in Taiwan?

To be honest with you, the stigma of taiwan has long since faded in a lot of circles. Bikes for example, they make the better ones off some brands in Taiwan, and the cheap ones in China.

I wonder if we will be driving one of them in ten years or so. Cheap ute just needs some refinedment and more power. Shame navara drops back in power with there little donk.
