BIG Bluefin Tuna on Super Deep jig 30/5/15

What a day yesterday (30/5/15)!!!

I took good mate Scott Campbell (FW soupster51) out yesterday on my boat to my super deep grounds and ended up getting bass groper, blue-eye trevalla and greybanded cod!

The highlight!!! - Scott was jigging my super deep Japanese 750g jig and things were quiet. I mentioned to Scott that there's more bait than normal and keep on jigging a bit more then I'll reset the drift.

Within seconds my outfit loaded big time and Scott was on. He got pinned to the gunnel and he said surely not a super deep fish (due to the power) ..... I said mmhhhhh unusual but maybe a big shark (painful)

After a long battle Scott and I starting thinking broadbill or marlin?

Scott said to me " mate its a stalemate and me things big tuna " .... mmhhh nahhhh cant be!

Scott had the fish to the 60m mark and said I cant take the pain my back is killing me .... remember no harness and manual wind up!

I took over after Scott who had spent over 1 hour on this fish ..... I could move this fish as I would gain 10 meters then loose 10 meters!!

After another 35 minutes I got the fish near the boat and Scott said "holy shit is a massive tuna" ..... then I spend another 10 minutes with Scott at the helm and the fish still fighting thats right it wouldn't give in and dived a few times and made another run!

Okay a few tense moments near the boat and under the boat (not a good felling) I had the fish at the boat (1 hour 45m). I said to Scott grab another gaff as we will need two!

We gaffed the fish and the power of adrenalin is amazing, we pulled it over the high gunnel of my Patriot boat (not easy) and as soon as the fish was over board one gaff snapped and the other bent open!

Wholy Shit!!! a MASSIVE Bluefin Tuna on jig from the deep trench (super deep spot). Plenty of high fives and a big man hug lol!!

We guesstimated 80kg and back at the ramp several people said did yo get a marlin today (they seen the tail) .... nope big tuna!

We weighed it on my digital scales that i have used to claim a State and Australian record bass groper so I know its accurate!

Official weight just over 84kg (185lb) on jig ..... well done to Scott and myself for a team effort ..... we WONT FORGET THIS FOR A LONGTIME!!!!!

Cheers for reading

 Nice fish, guys very impressive!

I know how hard they are to move as we did it longlining also, pulled up by hand!

For the record (to know what is actually out there), largest sizes we caught thru about 8 years around the coast

Yfin-90kg (Off freo)

Bigeye-107kg (Albany)

SBT-165-200kg (wide of Perth up to Rankin Bank area on a few occasions)

Sword-300kg trunked (500 whole?) another boat had 340kg. 150-200kg regularly.

As Rob H has said, The longliners have known for sometime these big pelagics are offshore. BF, BE, YF along with Blue Marlin and Broadbill Swordfish. Even Striped Marlin have been caught. Have'nt heard of too many Black Marlin though but it all comes down to what the current is doing and water temp. And I'm talking about Perth and south.

Worked on a Tuna boat years ago and biggest BF out from the Capes was 280kg.

If I was Deep Dropping I would also get a burley trail happening and float some big baits with just a little weight to slowly sink them in anticipation of a big Pelagic.

quite a few striped marlin, not sure about whether we hooked blue or black marlin as I couldnt tell them apart!

We had no interest in them and to be honest a solid swordie looks alot more impressive to me than any marlin-they are just a tree trunk-like machine.

Who did you work for?

Mon, 2015-06-01 20:10

A long time ago. Company was Aus Marine Fisheries. Boat was Hacyon No3 VNNY, based out of Hobart but 1st Japanese longling boat bought by an Australian Co. Aus Marine were a WA Freo company.

Mainly worked Southern Ocean. But slid up East & West coast at times, Much better than working the Southern Ocean that's for sure! (West & East coast that is)

Once in the Southern ocean after 3 months at sea chasing BF, I said to one crew member, "This is like being in Gaol!" his reply was, "Oh No! you get visitors in Gaol!"

What an epic fish. Once in a lifetime sort of capture, especially on a jigging outfit. I'm still in pain ;). That's the biggest tuna I've ever seen, no mean feat after living in Micronesia for three years. It was a painful and pumped up 2hrs, especially the last half an hour once we got it to the surface. Talk about nerve racking. Ryan you're a legend, fantastic day on the water, with a record fish that I don't think either of us will break. But you never know......

That's a stonker Ryan - well done to all.

Huge even by SA Standards and on a jig and all.

What was the length?? (I'm guessing must have been somewhere around 1.6 to tail fork)

Seeing is believing

Mon, 2015-06-01 21:13

I pulled into the boat ramp at CPBA next to Ryan on Saturday. As I walked down the jetty to bring the trailer closer I saw the tail of the Tuna sticking out of the esky - a very large esky. I almost fell off the jetty in disbelief. I immediately summoned young Dirk Nienaber whom I had taken out for the day to throw his eyeballs over this. To my surprise (maybe not actually) out popped Ryan's head from the front of the boat and he gave us a run down of the events of the day. Congrats to Ryan and Scott on this epic catch.

One hell of a capture mate.

Mon, 2015-06-01 21:21

One hell of a capture mate. Do you mind revealing how deep the jig itself was when it was hit? We talking like 150m deep or much deeper (jig depth at time of strike, not depth of water).

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
