Big Cobe

A few photos of a big cobia I shot off shark bay this week.

We were diving a nice 8m bombie in about 15m surrounded by sand. A mate said he’d seen a big manta earlier, and when I saw this off in the distance, I originally thought it was another shark! Once I realised it was a cobe, I took a few deep breaths and hid behind a fan coral for a few dives, until I ambushed him on one of his ledge patrols. I nailed a good holding shot, and he stripped a good 50m of line off my reel before I started to gain control! Unbelievable power these cobia.

Went 27kgs, and definately my pb.

Be interested in how it tasted. I caught an 80 pounder on line at Steep and it tasted like absolute crap.

Well done on your capture with the straight hook, I too would be interested to hear how it was on the tooth.

I have eaten them up to 65lb

I have eaten them up to 65lb and they have been fine. They are a massively underrated table fish IMHO. Always welcome on my boat...or from the stones up at Quobba.

Absolute monster. 10 kg is hard enough to reel in but on the straight hook is a cracking effort. Well done

On the tooth

Wed, 2019-09-18 08:01

cheers for the comments lads.  I had some Saturday and Sunday night, and can confirm this particular specimen is excellent eating.

There is more blood in cobia than a lot of other fish. The bloody lateral line and bloody parts just under the skin need to be removed or trimmed up, which I reckon stops the flesh getting bad flavours when cooked. This applies to all fish in my opinion.
