Bimini catching guides & snapping line
Recently I have started tying the bimini twist to join leader to my braid. I am having a problem with the bimini loop catching on the first guide and snapping my lures off. The actual bimini and join to the leader ends up fine (after i untangle it from the guide), but the line snaps at the join to the lure (standard uni knot, 40lb leader to hawian snap or clip).
The problem is not with the join to the lure or the mainline/braid join. For some reason the bimini loop just catches the guides. My bimini twists seem pretty decent (have practised lots and they are nice and slim).
Does anyone else have this problem or have any solutions? It only seems to happen when belting out lures. I am trying to land them on Rottnest so maybe I should just back off a bit and not try to throw them so hard??
The obvious would be to shorten my leader so it doesnt go through the guides, but I really prefer having a nice long mono shock leader.
Thanks for any comments.

try reducing the length of your double, i have the same problem ocasionally particularly with spin rods, i tend to keep my doubles to about 3-4 inches, this reduces the chance of the two lengths opening up and wrapping around the guides, hope this helps

Not sure what knot your using
Not sure what knot your using to join your double to the leader! But sometimes you can twist the double then tie the knot and then it will stay twisted! (won't open up)
Another thing you can do is put a touch of knot glue on your double in sections to keep it together.

As per Brads recommendation I suggest you learn to tie a friction knot, either a PR or a FG. The best way to solve your problem is to stop using bimini twists altogether.

Thanks for the suggestions
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I already do a fairly short bimini loop. But I might try the superglue jsut to stop it form opening.
Yes, best idea is to work out the FG knot. I have tried a few previously but it is all too hard (without a lot of practice). Unfortunately i dont go fishing enough & I would totally forget how to tie the knot the next time I had to!! LOL.
If I cant get the bimini to work properly I might go back to the good old albright. I am only using 14-20lb braid and 40-60lb leader so it almost doesnt warrant a fancy knot/loop. Just for tailor and the other usual landbased stuff.

Glue
I cant help with the knot Pembo, but i wouldn't use supa glue. It's too hard and brittle, it will crack apart after a short time.
The only glue i use for fishing is Rio UV knot sealer. You aply it to the knot or line indoors or the shade, it is soft and you can smooth it out with your fingers. Then you go out into the sun light and the UV rays set the glue in a few seconds. It also stays flexible. (rubbery ).
You can get it at most tackle stores, i get mine at Fly World Maylands.
Cheers Grant..

I had the same problem on a trip to coral bay, was my first time using heavier braid/mono. was belting metals around for trevally and queenies off the beach and yeh occasionaly the bimini loop would wrap around the first eye, except i didnt lose the lure it just swung back and nearly took my eyes out!. i dont have much experience with these sorta knots so i endded up just using a swivel and short leader, shock horror. worked fine for me, even helped with eliminating twist in the line.
but yer the other guys obviously have more knowledge here so try their ideas!

if you u want to cheat the
if you u want to cheat the system - use some narrow heat wrap that "just" covers the bimini knot - then heat up - wont get stuck in the guide again
alternatively;
never use a bimini for a leaderline; try using PR / GT or special allbright.
IMO the centauri to centauri is still the best (check youtube) - 3 twists for braid and 2 (std fig 8 )for the leaderline. Thats my standard knot I use for all fishing.

Will have to check out the Centauri knot. Does it cast through the guides well? Is it slim? Guess I will jsut google it.
The reason I have started using the bimini is becuase i usually tie a knot i have found called the GT knot which needs a loop (but there are many GT versions around and this one is nothing like the chinese finger trap versions - it is more like the "slim beauty" knot - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xe7nG9BBi_o
It is good becuase the leader tag end faces the reel so it casts very well. I find I need a slim leader join when using 40lb and up (definately at 60lb).

I have never had this problem
I have never had this problem and given you are saying the actual loop is catching around the guide I would have to ask is each side of the Bimini double (is each thread of the loop) the same length when you connect it to the leader if not it sounds like due to slightly different lengths the loop is opening up and catching the guide
Hope that helps
Cheers

Its a known and noted problem with bimini, either tie a shorter double or move onto the FG knot.
Shrink wrap - WTF? That isn't going to spool up nicely onthe reel ...

Shrink wrap - "heat wrap"
Shrink wrap - "heat wrap" -
actually quite the opposite - does well, however the wrap (2cm - 3cm is fine, any longer would be a issue) disintegrates after a days fishing. Since using centauri to centauri that problem has been solved.
This method served the purpose of 0.65mm to 1mm or more. Ideal for casting landbased heavies.
