Spots

Gday mate
In modern times you will be hard pressed being told exact locations on where to catch an abundance of quality fish. Your best bet would be to go to the department of infastructure marine department and pick your self up a chart of the area you want to fish.
Look for steep gradients in the oceans floor and bommies, variations etc. These areas generally produce fish. Become involved in the local fishing comunity which you are doing now, make friends with other anglers and learn from them.
Fishing is more than just putting a boat and filling the freezer. It is a huge endless learning experience that will build as you become more experienced.
I konw this probably isnt the answer you want, in fact you are probably thinking to your self, "who is this idiot". But believe me once you master one particular avenue of fishing and have your regular spots for producing nice fish you will understand.
Exploring and learning is the best part about fishing, if your ever up this way i will take you to a few spots.

Cheers
PB

South mole

All that shallow weedy water on the southern side of the south mole is good for Squid , also in the 4/5 m water depth in Cockburn sound where there is weed / sand you will get them , just drift along with a jig out and you will be sure to get something , try the wire jigs you thread a whole fish on as well, just put it on a float and long leader so it is a metre or so off the bottom and watch for the float to be pulled under .

Don't let your jig drag in the weed as it wont catch , carry an assortment of sizes so you can get the depth just right , bright colours for dirty water , more neutral colours for clean water but I don't think colours are a big factor some people do I don't, I think jig quality is more important , they don't make and sell the $30 jigs just to rip people off they work a lot better than the $2 bargain bin jigs..

GPS

Mate if you have a GPS on your boat if you look at the mapping there is the SW bank about 30km out from point peron. It is a very popular spot so from what I have heard gets hit hard. But there seems to be a lot of ground ground before that area in 30-40 mtrs of water.

So far ventured out that sort of area once in my boat and havent done the best, but every time I get out around there on mates boats it produces.
I have also heard that anchoring on the inside of the 5 fathom bank and burleying up also works on occassion behind GI for Pinkies and DHU. Just have to search around, I am still waiting to land the big one on my vessel and I have had it 12 months now.

Squid

A trick for squid that I've learnt since living up north. Troll around at the slowest pace you can with the squid jigs out the back, once you catch one, stop the boat and start casting and retreiving for them. It works wonders up here, should work down that way too.

Have a look around craypots, sometimes they can be on good ground.
